{"id":37987,"date":"2022-03-18T19:31:01","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T19:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/18\/acft-update-no-official-update-timeline-consequences-unclear\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:20:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:20:35","slug":"acft-update-no-official-update-timeline-consequences-unclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/18\/acft-update-no-official-update-timeline-consequences-unclear\/","title":{"rendered":"ACFT update: No official update \u2014 timeline, consequences unclear"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FORT STEWART, Ga. \u2014 As the clock counts down on April 1, when the Army Combat Fitness Test was scheduled to become the service\u2019s test of record, the Sergeant Major of the Army had little detail to offer at a pair of town hall events earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem? The service has been silent about the test while it weighs the results of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/12\/08\/defense-bill-would-pause-army-combat-fitness-test-roll-out-pending-an-independent-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">Congress-mandated independent review<\/a> that RAND did on the test and its potential impact on reservists and women\u2019s careers. The RAND report has been delivered to Congress and the Army, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/03\/09\/army-wont-commit-april-rollout-of-troubled-fitness-test.html\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com<\/a>, but the Army\u2019s senior leaders are still reviewing the findings and recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear whether the current version of the test will be the version that takes effect on April 1, nor is it clear how it will play into personnel considerations like flags, promotions or medical boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know everybody wants it. It\u2019s coming,\u201d Grinston said Wednesday evening when Army Times asked about the test\u2019s timeline. \u201cI promise we\u2019ll get that out as soon as [possible].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Tuesday morning virtual town hall, SMA said, \u201cdon\u2019t worry about [April 1],\u201d and that he was \u201chopeful that we\u2019ll get an announcement in the next two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you keep training for the ACFT version that you have now, I think you\u2019re going to be perfectly fine,\u201d he added. \u201cThere may be a minor tweak here or there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear what tweaks Grinston may be referring to, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/02\/20\/army-accidentally-reveals-possible-acft-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\">leaked \u201cpre-decisional\u201d update<\/a> to the test\u2019s website last month indicated that the service might not factor test scores into personnel considerations until several months after April. Congress had previously barred the Army from using the current version of the test for personnel matters until the RAND review was complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Gabe Ramirez said the service will \u201censure Soldiers are not unduly impacted during implementation,\u201d in a statement to Army Times. He also cautioned that \u201cno final decisions have been made regarding the Army Combat Fitness Test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Army official also described the plan as \u201cpre-decisional\u201d but said \u201call signs\u201d point towards the test \u2014 whatever its final form may be \u2014 not immediately affecting personnel issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also not clear whether soldiers with medical profiles will have to participate in a minimum of three ACFT events in order to pass, as the service indicated it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/11\/15\/permanent-profile-guidance-allows-modified-acft-with-as-few-as-one-event-during-diagnostic-phase\/\" target=\"_blank\">considering in years past<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaked website also indicated the service may eliminate the leg tuck event in favor of the plank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has not had an official fitness test since September 2020, when it eliminated the old Army Physical Fitness Test and its familiar routine of pushups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. In effect, though, the service has been without a fitness test since the COVID-19 pandemic halted APFTs in April 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers who enlisted that month are now eligible for promotion to sergeant after eclipsing 17 months time in service \u2014 forcing the service to <a href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/belvoir\/application\/files\/1416\/2033\/1761\/Army_Directive_on_Use_of_the_Army_Physical_Fitness_Test_APFT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">allow junior troops to take the old
