{"id":38232,"date":"2018-04-20T19:37:57","date_gmt":"2018-04-20T19:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/20\/this-team-won-the-armys-first-ever-best-mortar-competition\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:13:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:13:12","slug":"this-team-won-the-armys-first-ever-best-mortar-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/20\/this-team-won-the-armys-first-ever-best-mortar-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"This team won the Army\u2019s first-ever Best Mortar Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After decades of Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/15\/the-armys-best-sapper-competition-is-getting-a-new-name\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">competitions <\/a>for everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/16\/ranger-instructors-come-out-on-top-at-best-ranger-competition\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Best Ranger<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/11\/03\/two-ranger-medics-take-top-awards-at-the-armys-best-medic-competition\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Best Medic<\/a>, the tube jockeys finally got their own time to shine this past week with the first-ever Best Mortar Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the away team from the Army\u2019s \u201cAll-American\u201d Division won it all at Fort Benning, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four-man team from the 82nd Airborne Division bested eight other Army teams in a three-day competition that featured the Army Combat Readiness Physical Fitness Test, four mortar skills exams, live-fire events on the 60mm, 81mm and 120mm mortar systems, night operations, land navigation, medical lanes and obstacle courses, said Nate Snook, a Fort Benning spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/09\/check-out-the-high-tech-mortar-system-us-forces-set-up-in-manbij\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-06-at-17.26.20.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Check out the high-tech mortar system US forces set up in Manbij<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In pictures and video that first surfaced on Kurdistan 24, a news outlet in the region, U.S. forces appear to be flexing mine-resistant vehicles, weapons assets and construction equipment to Manbij in order to reinforce two bases there.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winning team included Staff Sgt. James Pennington, Sgt. Ryan Mosser, Cpl. Jacob Nolan and Cpl. Alec Norton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the competition was demanding, the soldiers said they had fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re getting paid to shoot rockets out of cannons. Albright\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition added a lot of strength and endurance events before the live fires, which meant taking extra steps to focus \u201cwhile gasping for air\u201d as they set up and sighted the mortars, Mosser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All four members of the winning team said they\u2019d bring what they learned back to their unit and try to introduce more physical events into their mortar training plans, according to the release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting paid to shoot rockets out of cannons.
