Army now expects to win, and the academy is lobbying to be included in the AP Top 25 when the final poll is released in the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you have a whole team of guys that have been with the coaching staff, it\u2019s really satisfying to see what they accomplished as a group,\u201d Monken said. \u201cThis means a lot to our team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this day of pass-happy offenses, Monken has accomplished the unthinkable with his option attack \u2014 his Black Knights have been winning regularly by pretty much sticking to the ground and not committing turnovers. Army had only five fumbles in more than 800 plays \u2014 785 rushes, 20 receptions \u2014 in 2017, a remarkable statistic, while attempting just 65 passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/military-sports\/2017\/12\/24\/2-point-gamble-late-td-help-army-beat-san-diego-state-42-35\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-897774348.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">2-point gamble, late TD help Army beat San Diego State 42-35<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Darnell Woolfolk scored on a 1-yard run with 18 seconds left, Kell Walker converted a go-ahead 2-point run and Army added a last-play defensive touchdown for a 42-35 victory over San Diego State on Saturday in the Armed Forces Bowl.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three of Army\u2019s victories were achieved without completing a pass, the most significant a 21-0 triumph on the road against service academy nemesis Air Force . Against archrival Navy, Army attempted to throw just once in a riveting 14-13 victory over the Midshipmen .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Black Knights won eight of their final nine games, but there are big holes to fill on both sides of the ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief among them is the key to the offense \u2014 quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw. But four fullbacks who combined for 1,871 yards rushing \u2014 Darnell Woolfolk, Andy Davidson, Connor Slomka and Calen Holt \u2014 return along with speedy running back Kell Walker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defensively, hard-hitting safety Rhyan England, defensive end John Voit (39 straight starts) and linebacker Alex Aukerman (15.5 TFLs) depart. But James Nachtigal (103 tackles), Cole Christiansen (84 tackles) and Kenneth Brinson (38 tackles) will give the Black Knights veteran leadership at linebacker while safety James Gibson (45 tackles) and cornerback Elijah Riley will help anchor the secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On special teams, Army loses placekicker Blake Wilson (3 of 8 on field goals) but punter Nick Schrage (42.9 yards\/punt) returns for his final season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Monken arrived, Army had had only one winning season since 1996. That he was one of eight finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award was no surprise to Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince coach Monken got there, he\u2019s turned it around,\u201d Niumatalolo said. \u201cYou can just see the program elevating, and he\u2019s taking them to a new level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
