Right now, the model has us over by about 600,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Frank Muth, head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/09\/27\/heres-how-the-68000-soldier-recruiting-goal-broke-down-by-mos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Recruiting Command<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s recruiting goal for 2020 is \u201cnorth of 68,000\u201d soldiers, Muth told an audience at the Association of the U.S. Army on Wednesday. But he hasn\u2019t officially received the mission letter announcing the new number, he cautioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the big differences this year is that the service\u2019s recruitment enterprise isn\u2019t \u201ctaking a knee\u201d at the close of the fiscal year in September like they traditionally do, according to Muth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recruiting stations dotting across the United States push into overdrive during the months of June, July and August to meet quotas, and are typically rewarded with down time at the start of the next fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause in that June, July, August push, they\u2019re literally working seven days a week to meet mission,\u201d Muth said. \u201cThey\u2019ll come out and they\u2019ll just slow down for October, November and December.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/09\/17\/student-loan-crisis-not-mideast-wars-helped-army-leaders-exceed-recruiting-goals-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-basic-training-new-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Student loan crisis, not Mideast wars, helped Army leaders exceed recruiting goals this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The service\u2019s leadership said it will exceed this year\u2019s desired active duty end-strength of 478,000 troops.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not happening this year,\u201d Muth added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, Army Recruiting Command made their October recruiting numbers halfway through the month, and immediately began working through their November goals. Now that November has started, Muth said that they\u2019re already working on January numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">December is typically considered \u201ca wash\u201d because of the Christmas and New Year holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe haven\u2019t done that in four years and we think that by early December we\u2019ll be able to start recruiting for February, which is one of our toughest months [and] will help us immensely,\u201d Muth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enlistment bump isn\u2019t just because recruiters are working overtime. These major urban areas have a large \u201cqualified military available\u201d population of youth, but the propensity to join the military doesn\u2019t exist, Muth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the Army has been staging events in these areas and increasing its outreach with civic leaders to build inroads into new communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy readdressing the 22 cities in America, we had a double-digit lift with females and minorities,&#8221; Secretary of the Army Ryan D. It\u2019s a giant metroplex commonly referred to as Dallas\u2013Fort Worth. The service must therefore focus on the urban sprawl connecting these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muth\u2019s team is now planning to break the 22 focus cities out into categories of \u201cmust win\u201d and \u201cmust keep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce we move one into \u2018must keep,\u2019 as you can imagine, your resources drop,\u201d Muth explained. \u201cBecause with winning it, you got to over-market, you got to put more assets and resources in there. &#8230; It allows \u2014 on a sliding scale throughout the year \u2014 to constantly look at those cities and see where they are.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Army Recruiting Command is \u201cvery close\u201d to moving Dallas from \u201cmust win\u201d to \u201cmust keep,&#8221; Muth added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cLast year, we were behind from day one at about 4,000.
