The goal is to get thousands of new ideas on how to better help and support veterans over the next six weeks, and award cash prizes for the best 40 ideas in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo end veteran suicide, we need to use every tool available,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/05\/02\/va-looks-to-fill-key-medical-posts-starting-with-the-departments-top-health-care-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> said in a statement. \u201cMission Daybreak is fostering solutions across a broad spectrum of focus areas to combat this preventable problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unconventional approach is intended to build upon the existing array of VA suicide prevention initiatives and solve the largely static problem of how to keep veterans from self harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/04\/20\/va-to-award-millions-in-suicide-prevention-grants-to-community-groups\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-89764888.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to award millions in suicide prevention grants to community groups<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About $52 million in grants are expected to be distributed to groups by this fall.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veteran suicides fell to their lowest level in 12 years in 2019, down more than one death per day from the previous year\u2019s levels, according to VA data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the most significant improvement in suicide metrics in five years, but it still leaves the number of veterans lost to suicide each day at about 17, despite years of legislative focus and funding to combat the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, VA officials announced plans to award nearly $52 million in grants for suicide prevention programs in coming months to community groups in an effort to provide more targeted help for individuals in distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Mission Daybreak initiative has similar parameters but a different approach, according to Dr. Matt Miller, national director of VA suicide prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA key to innovation is rapid implementation and development,\u201d he said. \u201cSo what we\u2019re really trying to foster and harness is those ideas that can be rapidly developed, be scalable across our system, and make a big difference quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first phase of the challenge \u2014 which is modeled after similar efforts in the Defense Department for a host of procurement and technology development issues \u2014 will require teams or individuals to submit a 10-page concept paper that describes \u201ca proposed solution, its impact on specific veteran communities, an evidence framework, [and] an implementation plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposals can focus on any facet of suicide prevention, but officials said they will be specifically considering several key areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Utilizing digital data from active and passive sources;<\/li><li>Improved access to and efficiency to the Veterans Crisis Line;<\/li><li>Preventing firearm suicides;<\/li><li>Improving community resilience and connection;<\/li><li>Incorporating family and community into veteran\u2019s well-being;<\/li><li>And reducing barriers to veterans asking for help.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top 30 ideas will each be awarded $250,000, and 10 others $100,000 each. The top 30 will also be invited to join an eight-week virtual accelerator program to help individuals refine the ideas, with additional cash prizes (including two first-place awards of $3 million) to be given out in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/08\/veteran-suicides-decreased-7-percent-in-2019-to-lowest-level-in-12-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BeThere.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veteran suicides decreased 7 percent in 2019 to lowest level in 12 years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 17 veterans a day died by suicide in 2019, the latest year for which data was available.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entrants will not be required to implement the ideas, but instead will help VA officials put the changes in place and monitor their impact on veterans\u2019 mental health and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller said initial data compiled by the department shows that the rate of veteran suicides may have declined even further in 2021. But even so, he is hopeful the new challenge can inspire new ideas to push those numbers down even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When factoring in active-duty military, reservists and other associated groups, the total of military and veteran suicide is roughly 20 per day. Many outside groups still quote the \u201c22-a-day\u201d statistic regarding veteran suicide, even thought that is based on an outdated estimate from VA officials more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer. Veterans, troops or their family members can also text 838255 or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/a> for
