{"id":39498,"date":"2019-04-30T01:14:32","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T01:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/30\/frustrations-mount-over-lack-of-progress-on-preventing-veterans-suicide\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:17:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:17:02","slug":"frustrations-mount-over-lack-of-progress-on-preventing-veterans-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/04\/30\/frustrations-mount-over-lack-of-progress-on-preventing-veterans-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Frustrations mount over lack of progress on preventing veterans\u2019 suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just hours before a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/04\/29\/this-week-in-congress-vets-suicides-in-the-spotlight\/\" target=_blank>Capitol Hill hearing Monday<\/a> on how to address the problem of veterans dying by suicide, a veteran took his own life outside the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers said that the incident was a painful reminder for all the effort and funding put into suicide prevention in recent years, progress on the issue<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/04\/19\/as-suicides-at-va-hospitals-increase-congress-wants-more-answers\/\" target=_blank> has been frustratingly inconsistent<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo weeks ago, three other veterans committed suicide at VA facilities in five days,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/12\/31\/incoming-chairmans-top-goal-for-2019-building-up-va-not-outside-care-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Mark Takano<\/a>, D-Calif., said. \u201cSo far, we have seen seven this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear we are not doing enough to support veterans in crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/04\/25\/recent-series-of-campus-suicides-raise-complicated-questions-for-va\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"288\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/baypines.jfif_.jpg?w=288\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Recent series of campus suicides raise complicated questions for VA<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Three veterans died by suicide at VA medical sites in six days, but the department has seen an overall decrease in campus suicides in recent years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Democrats and Republicans in the House are pledging to try and fix that in coming months, launching a series of hearings and legislative pushes to address the lingering problem of veterans suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takano and committee ranking member Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., said they are optimistic they can advance bipartisan legislation on the issue, to include more research and monitoring within VA facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a press conference ahead of the hearing to highlight the new congressional focus, called the issue an \u201cuncomfortable, urgent crisis\u201d and promised to work closely with Republican Party leaders on finding answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preventing suicides has been VA\u2019s top clinical priority for the past two years, and lawmakers noting that spending on support programs have more than doubled since 2005. (Zachary Hada\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials have noted the uptick in veterans who have died by suicide in public spaces at department facilities \u2014 25 in the last 18 months \u2014 does not reflect a statistically significant increase in the overall suicide problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut all of us feel these losses,\u201d said Dr. Richard Stone, acting head of the Veterans Health Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers and veterans groups expressed frustration at the department, not for their effort, but for their results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must confront an uncomfortable and deeply troubling truth: VA\u2019s current efforts and approaches to suicide prevention and mental health are not working,\u201d said Joe Chennelly, executive director at AMVETS. \u201cHow do we know this? In the simplest of terms, the suicide numbers aren\u2019t decreasing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America lamented that \u201cwe are far from a long-term sustainable solution to address veterans suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced a year-long task force review of the veterans suicide issue, engaging experts across multiple departments to find new ideas. The House effort echoes that move, but lawmakers hope to bring legislative force along with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/04\/11\/hundreds-witness-veteran-shoot-and-kill-himself-in-va-waiting-room\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AustinOPC.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Hundreds witness veteran shoot and kill himself in VA waiting room<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Austin, Texas, clinic was subsequently shut down for an investigation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the ideas being discussed at other committee hearings later this week: expanding eligibility for health care services, expanding research on suicides, mandating more reporting by VA on suicides on campuses and increased monitoring of prescriptions by VA doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelli Avenevoli, deputy director at the National Institutes of Mental Health, said in recent years officials have seen successes with a host of new approaches, such as universal mental health screening for all patients and detailed follow-up plans for suicidal patients. Those ideas may also be included in coming House plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takano, whose uncle \u2014 a Vietnam veteran \u2014 died by suicide decades ago, said lawmakers are open to any innovations that could help with the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said they are open to the conversation, calling challenge a national problem, not just one shouldered by their staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did not disclose any additional details about the Cleveland suicide, which occurred early Monday morning outside of the campus\u2019 emergency room. Stone noted that more than 240 suicides have been prevented on the grounds of VA facilities since the start of 2017, but the idea that 25 other deaths happened \u201cwith help just a few feet away is deeply troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer. Veterans, troops or their families members can also text 838255 or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=_blank>VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/a> for
