We clearly understand what\u2019s going on and we are calmly preparing for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He deplored the decision by the U.S., Britain, Australia, Germany and Canada to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/23\/us-draws-down-ukraine-embassy-presence-as-war-fears-mount\/\" target=\"_blank\">withdraw some of their diplomats and dependents from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv<\/a>, saying the move \u201cwasn\u2019t pleasant for us\u201d and emphasizing that \u201cwe don\u2019t think that there is a threat right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. President Joe Biden told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a call Thursday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/01\/27\/biden-says-russian-invasion-in-february-a-distinct-possibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">there is a \u201cdistinct possibility\u201d that Russia could invade the country in February<\/a>. But the Ukrainian leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/25\/ukraine-urges-calm-saying-russian-invasion-not-imminent\/\" target=\"_blank\">played down the war fear<\/a>s, arguing Friday that the Russian troop buildup could be part of Moscow\u2019s attempts to exert \u201cpsychological pressure\u201d and sow panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can\u2019t allow panic in the country,\u201d Danilov told the AP. \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult for us to maintain control over the economic situation when all the media keep saying that the war will start tomorrow. Panic is a sister of defeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/01\/28\/russia-can-now-attack-ukraine-with-very-little-warning-pentagon-leaders-warn\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/UkieRussia24.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Russia can now attack Ukraine with \u2018very little warning,\u2019 Pentagon leaders warn<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">U.S. defense leaders warned Friday that President Vladimir Putin \u201cclearly now has the ability\u201d to have his forces invade Ukraine with \u201cvery, very little warning,\u201d but that U.S., NATO and Ukrainian forces stand ready to respond if that happens.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danilov said that Ukraine has the potential to quickly and dramatically beef up its 250,000-strong military in case of a Russian offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey will face a response from our society, our citizens, our military,\u201d Danilov told the AP. \u201cWe can put 2 (million) to 2.5 million people under arms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that up to 420,000 Ukrainians have gained combat experience in fighting with Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and up to 1 million in the nation of 41 million people have hunting licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danilov pointed at the Ukrainian Interior Ministry\u2019s announcement Monday that it had thwarted a plot to stage riots in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes to achieve his goal of destroying Ukraine through internal destabilization even without an invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegrettably, we have many agents of influence of the Russian Federation here, who are behind the plans of destabilizing our country from within,\u201d he said pointing at a pro-Russian party that has a sizeable presence in Ukraine\u2019s parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the 2014 ouster of a Kremlin-friendly president in Kyiv, Moscow annexed Ukraine\u2019s Crimean Peninsula and backed an insurgency in the country\u2019s eastern industrial heartland. Fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed rebels has killed over 14,000 people, and efforts to reach a settlement there have stalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the start of the separatist conflict in Ukraine, Russia has been accused of sending troops and weapons to the separatists, something it has denied. It has given out over 700,000 Russian passports to people living in rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harsh exchange at the U.N. Security Council<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia accused the West on Monday of \u201cwhipping up tensions\u201d over Ukraine and said the U.S. had brought \u201cpure Nazis\u201d to power in Kyiv as the U.N. It was the first open session where all protagonists in the Ukraine crisis spoke publicly, even though the U.N.\u2019s most powerful body took no action..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although more high-level diplomacy is expected this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/09\/us-hones-warnings-offers-to-russia-over-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">talks between the U.S. and Russia have so far failed to ease tensions<\/a> in the crisis, with the West saying Moscow is preparing for an invasion. Russia denies it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/14\/russia-demands-us-nato-response-next-week-on-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">demanded that NATO promise never to allow Ukraine to join the alliance, halt the deployment of NATO weapons near Russian borders, and roll back its forces from Eastern Europe<\/a>. You\u2019re waiting for it to happen, as if you want to make your words become a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He blamed the U.S. for the 2014 ouster of a Kremlin-friendly president in Kyiv, saying it brought to power \u201cnationalists, radicals, Russophobes and pure Nazis,\u201d and created the antagonism that exists between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf they hadn\u2019t done this, then we to date would be living in a spirit of good neighborly relations and mutual cooperation,\u201d Nebenzia said. \u201cHowever, some in the West just don\u2019t clearly like this positive scenario. What\u2019s happening today is yet another attempt to drive a wedge between Russia and Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nebenzia pointedly left the council chamber as the Ukrainian ambassador started to speak, giving his seat to his deputy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vote on holding an open meeting passed 10-2, with Russia and China opposed, and India, Gabon and Kenya abstaining. Zelenskyy and his officials have made repeated calls for its modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moscow has staunchly refused to amend the Minsk agreement and criticized Ukraine\u2019s Western allies for failing to encourage Ukraine to fulfill its obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Envoys from Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany met Wednesday for more than eight hours in Paris to discuss ways to implement the Minsk agreement. They made no visible progress but agreed to meet again in two weeks in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/01\/27\/these-units-from-across-the-army-and-air-force-are-on-alert-for-ukraine-deployment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1000w_q95-1.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">These units from across the Army and Air Force are on alert for Ukraine deployment<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Units from around the Army and Air Force are on heightened alert.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danilov warned the West against pressuring Ukraine into fulfilling the Minsk deal, saying it would provoke dangerous instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf they insist on the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements as they are it will be very dangerous for our country,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the society doesn\u2019t accept those agreements, it could lead to a very difficult internal situation and Russia counts on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also argued that if Ukraine honors the deal it, that will allow Russia to demand the lifting of Western sanctions that were contingent on progress in implementing the Minsk agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danilov called for negotiating a new document that could be realistically implemented, adding that it should force \u201cPutin to simply pull his troops and tanks back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He denounced the Russian demands for NATO to bar Ukraine from ever joining the alliance, saying that the country, a former Soviet republic, has made a choice to seek to integrate into NATO and the European Union, which is reflected in its constitution. It is not a member of either bloc at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one has the right to dictate to us whether we should or shouldn\u2019t join alliances,\u201d Danilov said. \u201cIt\u2019s our people\u2019s sovereign right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also noted that Ukraine needs more Western weapons, saying \u201cit\u2019s our only request to our partners \u2014 give us more weapons to defend ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He criticized Germany for refusing to provide Ukraine with weapons, charging that Berlin has also failed to properly apologize to Ukrainians for Nazi crimes during World War II when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegrettably, they haven\u2019t apologized for killing millions of our citizens,\u201d he said. \u201cThey apologize to the Russians as if we were one country.
