{"id":40896,"date":"2019-10-03T14:20:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T14:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/10\/03\/more-than-a-dozen-army-alaska-soldiers-in-hospital-following-night-jump\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:25:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:25:48","slug":"more-than-a-dozen-army-alaska-soldiers-in-hospital-following-night-jump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/03\/more-than-a-dozen-army-alaska-soldiers-in-hospital-following-night-jump\/","title":{"rendered":"More than a dozen Army Alaska soldiers in hospital following night jump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 16 soldiers were hospitalized following a static-line parachuting accident at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, last night, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 87 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/09\/30\/army-announces-25th-infantry-division-leadership-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">25th Infantry Division<\/a>, were jumping from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/air\/2019\/08\/08\/air-force-pauses-flight-ops-for-more-than-a-hundred-c-130s-after-atypical-cracking-found\/\" target=\"_blank\">C-130 aircraft <\/a>when the accident occurred, Army Alaska spokesman John Pennell told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers were based out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Matt Myer, commander of 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, said in a statement that soldiers had to be recovered from trees, indicating that they likely missed the drop zone or were blown off course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParatroopers from across the brigade and Camp Shelby are assisting in getting others out of the trees,\u201d Myer said in a statement that went out early Thursday morning. \u201cAll of the accounted for jumpers are being afforded access to phones to call their loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jump took place at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday. There were approximately 650 soldiers jumping in to begin a 10-day training exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAirborne operations all bear an inherent risk. We strive to mitigate this risk as much as possible,&#8221; a 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local hospital was notified prior to the jump, the statement added. Emergency vehicles were also on standby on Camp Shelby prior to the jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce all Soldiers have been accounted for, our goal is ultimately to continue training,\u201d Myer said in his statement. \u201cDespite the challenges that we currently face, Soldiers always place the mission first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 3,000 Army Alaska soldiers were participating in the Arctic Anvil exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are grateful for the overwhelming support that we have received from units here on Camp Shelby as well as local first responders,&#8221; the 4th IBCT statement reads. &#8220;The entire community has come together to ensure that we are
