I did a job that any other person put in that position would have done,\u201d Romesha told about 100 people attending his recent presentation to the Young Professionals Network in the Grand Hotel. He\u2019s also the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2016\/04\/16\/memoir-by-clint-romesha-moh-recipient-on-sale-may-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRed Platoon,\u201d<\/a> a firsthand account of the firefight with Taliban insurgents at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/04\/the-battle-of-kamdesh-which-netted-two-medals-of-honor-is-coming-to-the-big-screen-twice\/\" target=\"_blank\">Combat Outpost Keating<\/a> in Afghanistan on Oct. 3, 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon a person serving in the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A former U.S. Army staff sergeant who lives in Minot, Romesha received the medal from President Obama during a ceremony in the White House on Feb. 11, 2013, for his actions during the 14-hour firefight when Taliban insurgents attacked the outpost in Afghanistan in October 2009. Eight Army members lost their lives in the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romesha told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minotdailynews.com\/news\/local-news\/2019\/01\/american-valor\/\" target=_blank>Minot Daily News<\/a> that he was selected to wear the ribbon of silk and the medal \u201cbut it\u2019s not mine. It not only represents those eight guys that gave up more than was ever required of them, it represents every American, all of our service men and women \u2014 past, present and future. The ones that sacrificed, the ones that are currently sacrificing and unfortunately, the ones that are going to have to do it in the future to sacrifice. That\u2019s what I wear it for now, that\u2019s why I carry it with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said when he&#8217;s out and about he can pull the medal out of his pocket and put it in people&#8217;s hands and say, &#8220;This is mine, this is ours.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2017\/12\/06\/its-their-medal-2-medal-of-honor-recipients-will-donate-their-medals-to-4th-id\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635876749883793445-ap-obama-medal-of-honorjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">&#8216;It&#8217;s their medal&#8217;: 2 Medal of Honor recipients will donate their medals to 4th ID<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The medals will be presented at a ceremony at Fort Carson, Colorado, on Thursday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his presentation Romesha gave the group a detailed report on the battle in Afghanistan that day in October 2009, sharing it with the YP audience, including many military members attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romesha said he appreciates being able to share the story of his military experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m a firm believer that we as veterans owe it to this country to share those stories because you can never truly convey what combat is to people but maybe we can shed a little light on what true service and sacrifice is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said many people call him a hero. &#8220;I&#8217;m not. I don&#8217;t feel that way. I never have. I always thought of myself as a warrior,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said true heroes are the ones who don&#8217;t come home. &#8220;I think we need to remember that every day \u2014 never forget, always remember,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2013\/08\/05\/courage-at-keating-second-moh-9-silver-stars-for-standout-b-troop\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310308040001arjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Courage at Keating: 2 Medals of Honor, 1 DSC, 8 Silver Stars for standout B Troop<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The battle at Combat Outpost Keating remains one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. forces since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan \u2014 and it is the first battle to produce two Medal of Honor recipients since the Battle of Mogadishu almost 20 years ago<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romesha told the group that the true motivation for everything he has ever seen in a combat situation when lives are on the line &#8220;is love for your fellow brother.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;And that motivational love will get people out of a foxhole and run for the machine gun every day. And that&#8217;s the biggest difference between what we are as Americans and what the rest of the world is, is we do it out of love, not hate,&#8221; Romesha said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he was presented the Medal of Honor Romesha said he remembers as the citation was being read and he stood up to receive the medal, right before the president put it around his neck he looked out and in the front row he could see his family, Gold Star family members behind them and to the left were the guys he was with that day of the battle in Afghanistan. He said he thought how tragic something like this had to happen but how amazing it was to be there not just with his family but with his Gold Star family and his military family all under one roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re all one big family sharing this moment together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally from California, Romesha came to North Dakota to work in the oil fields and settled in Minot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s so great to be here in Minot. I love it, I never thought in a million years that I\u2019d ever make it to North Dakota and then all of a sudden I realize I\u2019m transitioning out.
