He is scheduled to be sentenced April 16. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Prince George\u2019s County jury deliberated for about two hours before convicting him of first-degree murder in the May 2017 killing of Richard Collins III, 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of Collins\u2019 parents hugged them after the verdict, while Urbanski\u2019s mother leaned over and wept. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins\u2019 parents said in a statement after the verdict that \u201cjustice is finally being served.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo-and-a-half years after Richard\u2019s murder, this verdict has reaffirmed one of our nation\u2019s most fundamental values \u2014 that every American, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation, is entitled to live freely and safely,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/05\/22\/newly-commissioned-lieutenant-stabbed-to-death-in-possible-hate-crime\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap17142065694839.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Newly commissioned lieutenant stabbed to death in possible hate crime<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A University of Maryland student is accused of killing 2nd Lt. Richard Collins III, who was set to graduate Tuesday from Bowie State University and begin a career in the Army.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Hill Jr. agreed to throw out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/06\/06\/judge-allows-racist-fb-page-as-evidence-in-fatal-stabbing-of-newly-commissioned-2nd-lieutenant\/\" target=\"_blank\">a hate crime charge against Urbanski <\/a>before jurors began deliberating. The judge ruled that prosecutors didn\u2019t meet their legal burden of showing racial hatred motivated Urbanski to stab Collins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hill\u2019s ruling left jurors to decide between two murder charges, a decision that hinged on whether they found Collins was killed in a premeditated, intentional act of violent hate or an alcohol-fueled attack by an \u201cout-of-his-mind drunk.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense attorneys didn\u2019t dispute Urbanski killed Collins and conceded he committed a crime. They urged jurors to convict Urbanski of second-degree murder instead of first-degree murder. Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors said a toxic mixture of alcohol and racist propaganda poisoned Urbanski\u2019s mind and emboldened him to act on his hatred of black people. Defense attorney John McKenna said there was no evidence or testimony to support a racial motive for the killing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSean was stupid drunk, and the only poison in his veins was the alcohol,\u201d McKenna said Wednesday during the trial\u2019s closing arguments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prosecutor, Jonathon Church, said Urbanski already brandished a 3-inch folding knife when he emerged from the shadows of a wooded area and approached Collins at the bus stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe had it ready because he knew in his mind what he was going to do,\u201d Church said of the knife. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judge allowed prosecutors to present evidence that Urbanski had saved at least six photographs of racist memes on his cellphone and liked a Facebook group called \u201cAlt-Reich: Nation.\u201d Church described some of the memes during closing arguments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army shortly before his death and was preparing to be deployed to the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea. Collins Jr. via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McKenna said an expert witness for the defense concluded that Urbanski\u2019s blood alcohol level was more than twice and up to three times the legal limit at the time of the killing. The defense lawyer argued his client was too drunk to have the intent or premeditation necessary to support a first-degree murder conviction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe committed a crime. Absolutely,\u201d McKenna said. \u201cJust not first-degree murder.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was just after 3 a.m. on a Saturday when Urbanski approached Collins while he waited for an Uber driver with a friend, a white man, and an Asian woman whom they met at the bus stop. Urbanski had watched them for more than 10 minutes before he briefly left and then returned, brandishing a folding knife as he approached the friends from a wooded area, according to prosecutors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStep left, step left if you know what\u2019s best for you,\u201d Urbanski told them, according to police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Collins said before Urbanski stabbed him once in his chest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police arrested Sean Urbanski at the bus stop, 50 feet (15 meters) from where Collins was dying. After fatally stabbing Collins, Urbanski folded the knife, clipped it onto his pocket and sat down on a bench until police arrived, prosecutors said.
