{"id":41312,"date":"2019-03-27T18:34:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T18:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/27\/national-guard-providing-relief-from-massive-floods-in-midwest\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:31:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:31:23","slug":"national-guard-providing-relief-from-massive-floods-in-midwest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/03\/27\/national-guard-providing-relief-from-massive-floods-in-midwest\/","title":{"rendered":"National Guard providing relief from massive floods in Midwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=9b4d8ef0-37ac-41d6-9ed2-0076c36b11fe\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-9b4d8ef0-37ac-41d6-9ed2-0076c36b11fe.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">After historic flooding in Nebraska, livestock was scattered and in danger of starving after being stranded without feed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/16\/the-army-national-guard-is-looking-for-soldiers-for-its-new-security-force-assistance-brigade\/\">National Guard<\/a> is helping communities throughout the Midwest affected by intense flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 340 guardsmen are working in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and other states to aid those impacted by unexpectedly high floodwaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/219257\/guard_members_respond_to_midwests_historic_flooding\" target=_blank>believes <\/a>the flooding was worse than usual this year due to abnormally high temperatures that led to more storms and melted snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.com\/sfab\">National Guard <\/a>members have responded to this disaster by working with state and local officials to search for and rescue those trapped in flood-affected areas, get first-responders to those in need and provide food and water to the Midwest communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It comes down to protecting [the] community,&#8221; said Air Force Maj. Michael Mitchell, medical plans officer for Missouri Air National Guard\u2019s 139th Airlift Wing. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got a lot of manpower, a lot of hands here, and we&#8217;re coming together with the civilian force they&#8217;ve got here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army Corps of Engineers reported that floodwaters have overtaken rivers and breached 26 levees so far. Gauret Stearns)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the major problems, the National Guard is also trying to solve flood-related issues on a more granular level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the South Dakota Army National Guard\u2019s Company A, 139th Brigade Support Battalion has been working with authorities at the Native-American Pine Ridge Reservation to bring them clean drinking water after floodwaters destroyed a local water line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nebraska, Army guardsmen with the state\u2019s Company B, 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment dropped bales of hay via helicopter for stranded cows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClearly, the response phase of this thing was really well done,\u201d said the Air Force\u2019s Gen. Joseph Lengyel, who also serves as National Guard Bureau chief. \u201cThis says so much.
