{"id":41628,"date":"2021-02-19T20:21:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T20:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/19\/the-army-doesnt-know-how-many-extremists-it-has-booted\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:23:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:23:38","slug":"the-army-doesnt-know-how-many-extremists-it-has-booted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/02\/19\/the-army-doesnt-know-how-many-extremists-it-has-booted\/","title":{"rendered":"The Army doesn\u2019t know how many extremists it has booted"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army can\u2019t say how many soldiers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/12\/27\/2-kicked-out-of-national-guard-over-white-supremacist-ties\/\" target=_blank>kicked out for extremism<\/a> in recent years, largely because those incidents are filed under the broad category of \u201cmisconduct\u201d discharges, according to the service\u2019s response to a Freedom of Information Act request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials at the Pentagon did not have data that could shed light on the issue either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrently, extremism behavior is not identified by a separate code for discharges,\u201d said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Gabriel J. Ramirez. \u201cAs we await further DOD guidance on extremism, we are conducting stand downs across the force and exploring options on ways to further combat this corrosive issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data omission makes it difficult to understand the extent to which extremism is a problem in the ranks \u2014 an issue that came to the forefront after at least 22 current or former service members were charged with federal crimes for participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/22\/former-army-captain-arrested-after-live-streaming-capitol-riot\/\" target=_blank>Capitol riot in Washington, D.C., <\/a>last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced in early February plans for a 60-day stand-down across the military to address the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/02\/28\/white-nationalism-remains-a-problem-for-the-military-poll-shows\/\" target=_blank>extremism among troops<\/a>. During a press briefing Friday, he hinted at plans to gather data on extremism, but did not detail what that would entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI expect for the numbers to be small. But, quite frankly, they\u2019ll probably be a little bit larger than most of us would guess,\u201d Austin said. \u201cI would just say that small numbers in this case can have an out-sized impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/14\/army-guardsman-first-known-service-member-arrested-after-capitol-riot\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Capture.JPG_f0b905.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army Guardsman, first known service member, arrested after Capitol riot<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cLol to anyone who\u2019s possibly concerned about the picture of me going around &#8230; Not like I did anything illegal,\u201d the Guardsman said in a social media post.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has <a href=\"https:\/\/armypubs.army.mil\/epubs\/DR_pubs\/DR_a\/ARN30511-AR_600-20-002-WEB-3.pdf\" target=_blank>regulations <\/a>that guard against extremism, and the guidance is punitive, meaning soldiers who violate it can be punished under the Uniformed Code of Military Justice and even separated from the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the number of administrative separation boards that dealt with extremism can\u2019t be looked at separately, according to Human Resources Command\u2019s FOIA office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe information being sought is not tracked or broken down as requested. The discharge information would fall under a separation code that is inclusive of all \u2018Misconduct\u2019 discharges,\u201d reads the command\u2019s response to a FOIA request. \u201cThis command does not have a separation code for just extremist activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army Crime Records Center is fielding a separate FOIA request regarding extremist arrests, but it\u2019s not clear whether they would even deal with the bulk of extremism-related cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without criminality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/12\/15\/army-cid-is-burned-out-and-mismanaged-by-military-police-leadership-special-agents-say\/\" target=_blank>Army CID special agents<\/a> wouldn\u2019t necessarily get involved in the case, a CID official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/02\/11\/the-navy-has-no-idea-how-many-sailors-it-has-booted-for-extremist-activity\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21036073333264.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Navy has no idea how many sailors it has booted for extremist activity<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A reg exists for COs to separate sailors for such activity, but the Navy doesn&#039;t track how often it&#039;s used.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adverse actions for extremism can take many forms, including non-judicial punishments under UCMJ article 15 or Equal Opportunity investigations, said retired Army judge advocate Lt. Col. Franklin D. Rosenblatt. Other extremist acts could fall under UCMJ article 134 for conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA soldier who refuses to take down a Confederate flag from a barracks room, for example, could be disciplined for failure to obey an order rather than engaging in extremist activity,\u201d said Rosenblatt, who now works for the Mississippi law firm<i> <\/i>Butler Snow LLP and helps soldiers who face racial discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is admittedly not always a clear line between sympathizing with causes such as QAnon and violations of military orders,\u201d Rosenblatt added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army regulation on extremism doesn\u2019t list specific organizations that are off-limits. But some groups that appear to be under scrutiny are those included on an infographic circulated by the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/02\/10\/special-operations-training-center-warns-soldiers-of-symbols-co-opted-by-extremists\/\" target=_blank>John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/18\/army-reserve-sergeant-and-awol-soldier-who-joined-ypg-arrested-amid-capitol-riot-fallout\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/50838491556_c1cb30a6bb_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army Reserve sergeant and AWOL soldier who joined YPG arrested amid Capitol riot fallout<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An Army reservist described as \u201can avowed white supremacist\u201d and a former soldier who fought with the YPG in Syria and espoused far-left views were both arrested this weekend.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The infographic was made by the New York City Police Department\u2019s intelligence bureau and highlighted \u201cextremist imagery\u201d used by adherents to QAnon, the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and the Oath Keepers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special warfare center used the infographic to familiarize leaders with new extremist symbols after one of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/02\/10\/special-operations-training-center-warns-soldiers-of-symbols-co-opted-by-extremists\/\" target=_blank>medical courses had to change its logo<\/a> last year because it was nearly identical to imagery used by an anti-government militia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re keenly aware that we\u2019re on the leading edge of a broader Department of Defense effort, and we\u2019re awaiting guidance before we do more than educate and inform our formation,\u201d the school\u2019s chief of staff, Col. Matt Gomlak, said last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The infographic describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/hatewatch\/2017\/05\/08\/what-kek-explaining-alt-right-deity-behind-their-meme-magic\">\u201cKek\u201d flags<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/boogaloo\">Boogaloo<\/a> patches and variations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/references\/hate-symbols\/pepe-the-frog\">Pepe the Frog meme<\/a> as examples of imagery co-opted by extremists, in addition to more recognizable swastikas and Norse runes long used by neo-Nazis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blurred line between internet culture and traditional extremism may prove difficult for the Pentagon in tackling the problem, especially when it\u2019s not always easy to discern what\u2019s against
