Andy Beshear announced Monday that more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/01\/05\/kentucky-national-guard-sending-about-200-soldiers-to-kosovo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kentucky National Guard<\/a> members will deploy to 30 health care facilities, beginning this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kentucky is currently experiencing a record surge of COVID-19 cases fueled by the omicron variant that has started to strain some of the state\u2019s hospitals. Roughly one-third of Kentucky\u2019s hospitals are reporting critical staffing shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBetween the National Guard we already have out there and the ones we are going to be sending to other hospitals, we\u2019ll have about 445 active guardsmen and women assisting through hospitals and and at the moment through our food banks,\u201d Beshear said a news briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/12\/10\/national-guard-helping-virus-sapped-states-hospitals\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6933484.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">National Guard helping virus-sapped states, hospitals<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has soared to about 54,000 on average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democratic governor noted that the deployment \u201cis not going to be solely voluntary\u201d and that some people will receive military orders to help with the pandemic-related efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I cannot think of a higher calling right now in what is a war and the deadliest war in our lifetime of ensuring that we can increase hospital capacity by using the guard,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of <a href=\"https:\/\/chfs.ky.gov\/agencies\/dph\/covid19\/COVID19DailyReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Monday\u2019s report<\/a>, 1,873 Kentuckians were hospitalized with the virus.
