Agencies were evaluated on their military recruiting efforts, service member-related policies, rules for reservists, and departmental culture. They are listed alphabetically in the chart, with those that described the most accommodating practices and environments designated with a marker by their names. Not everything listed in the chart was considered when evaluating agencies, and many items not listed were considered.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span class=\"s1\"><b><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/law-enforcement\/2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">The list\u00a0<\/a><\/b><\/span><b><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/law-enforcement\/2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">\u2014 top 20 law enforcement agencies compared<\/a><\/b><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\"><b><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/bestforvets-lawenforcement2017\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.MilitaryTimes.com\/bestforvets-lawenforcement2017\">The main story<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Hiring <\/b>indicates whether departments told us they are hiring now; they plan to hire within the next 12 months; they are unsure if they&#8217;ll hire within 12 months; or they have no plans to hire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Veteran hiring preference<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">shows whether a department gives veterans a leg up in the hiring process. Those with numbers in this column offer extra exam points. For example, a department that awards veterans 10 extra points on a 100-point exam would be designated as 10\/100. Agencies with checkmarks either have a veteran preference not related to exam points or did not provide enough information about their exam points for us to detail them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Union <\/b>shows whether a department is unionized, and if so, with what union or unions.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span class=\"s1\">AHPSG: Airway Heights Public Safety Guild<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">CFPBA: Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">DCPBA: Dade County Police Benevolent Association<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">DPPA: Denver Police Protective Association<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">FOP: Fraternal Order of Police<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">FWOG: Fish and Wildlife Officers Guild<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">HCDO: Harris County Deputy\u2019s Organization<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">OCSCO: Oakland County Sheriff&#8217;s Command Officers<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">OCSD: Oakland County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputies<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">PCDSA: Pima County Deputy Sheriff&#8217;s Association<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">SDPOA: San Diego Police Officers&#8217; Association<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"s1\">TPOA: Tucson Police Officers Association<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Veteran on-boarding<\/b> rates the process departments use to acclimate new veteran employees to working for the agency, including orientation, training and mentorship programs. Best rating is 4 stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Departmental training about military<\/b> rates the frequency and extent of training that agency employees receive about military culture, career paths and other issues, as well as how widespread such training is within the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Military spouse policies<\/b> rates the efforts a department makes to recruit and accommodate employees who are military spouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>ESGR award <\/b>shows the highest award the agency has received from the Defense Department&#8217;s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve national committee.
