Coming to a TV near you."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Space Force, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/space\/2018\/08\/09\/space-force-will-be-6th-military-branch-by-2020-vice-president-pence-announces\/\" target=_blank>the sixth branch of the military<\/a> proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, is still in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/08\/09\/no-answers-yet-on-cost-structure-of-space-force\/\" target=_blank>initial stages of development<\/a> and may never come to fruition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/11\/05\/midterms-could-crash-trumps-space-force-on-the-launch-pad\/\" target=_blank>if critics in Congress have their way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \u201cSpace Force,\u201d the newly announced TV show parodying the creation of the titular service? That\u2019s as real as the moon landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/tv\/news\/space-force-netflix-steve-carell-greg-daniels-1203109598\/#utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_campaign=social_bar&#038;utm_content=bottom&#038;utm_id=1203109598\" target=_blank>Variety reports<\/a> that Netflix has ordered a season of the space-service themed comedy, created by \u201cThe Office\u201d showrunner Greg Daniels and its lead actor Steve Carell, who is also set to star in \u201cSpace Force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show \u201cis described as a workplace comedy centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services,\u201d Variety stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think \u201cParks &amp; Recreation,\u201d but with less \u201cPaunch Burger\u201d and more \u201cUnited Launch Alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Netflix followed up the initial story in Variety by posting an official trailer, which shows a view from space as the sun rises above the Earth\u2019s horizon. The visuals were accompanied by Richard Strauss\u2019 \u201cThus Spoke Zarathustra\u201d in what appears to be an homage to \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a sixth major division of the United States armed forces. The goal of the new branch is to \u2018defend satellites from attack\u2019 and \u2018perform other space-related tasks\u2019 \u2026 or something,\u201d reads the promo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear how close \u201cSpace Force\u201d will mirror real-life events, what role Carell will play, or whether the real-life characters in the Space Force creation story \u2014 people like acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who as deputy defense secretary took the lead role in plans to stand up the new service, or Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, a one-time critic who has now voiced support for the plan \u2014 will appear in the show by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with no release date announced, it\u2019s unclear whether episodes have already been shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we here at Defense News have a couple ideas of some potential storylines for the first season of Space Force:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The announcement: <\/b>The president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/06\/18\/trump-orders-creation-of-independent-space-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">makes a surprise announcement calling for the creation of a Space Force.<\/a> The Pentagon immediately goes into crisis mode, as no one in the building knew the directive was coming, and several prominent officials (say, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2017\/11\/21\/space-for-a-space-corps-congress-lays-groundwork-for-controversial-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the Air Force<\/a> or even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/08\/13\/pentagon-chief-defends-his-reversal-on-space-force-says-its-the-right-thing-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">defense secretary<\/a>) had been on record against forming such a service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Hidden figures: <\/b>The Air Force\u2019s cost estimates for a Space Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-force-association\/2018\/09\/17\/air-force-secretary-space-force-will-come-with-13b-in-added-costs\/\" target=_blank>\u201cleak\u201d to the press<\/a>. Space Force advocates worry that the high number could kill the initiative before it ever really starts, inciting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/11\/19\/space-force-could-cost-fraction-of-air-force-estimates\/\" target=_blank>back-and-forth battle<\/a> over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/11\/15\/heres-what-the-pentagon-thinks-the-actual-cost-of-a-space-force-will-be\/\" target=_blank>cost of the new service<\/a>. No one outside of Washington actually cares either way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Air Forced:<\/b> Think of this episode as a comedy of errors in the style of \u201cVeep\u201d or the notorious requirements development scene in \u201cThe Pentagon Wars.\u201d After the president vows that the Space Force will be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/10\/23\/pentagon-presents-recommendations-on-space-force-to-trump\/\" target=_blank>entirely separate service<\/a>, the Air Force suddenly finds the future of space operations out of its control. But over a series of meetings, viewers see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/12\/13\/will-the-space-force-sit-under-the-department-of-the-air-force-the-pentagon-finally-has-an-answer\/\" target=_blank>tide gradually turn<\/a>, and the Pentagon is forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/12\/20\/trumps-new-space-force-to-reside-under-department-of-the-air-force\/\" target=_blank>concede the Space Force back to Air Force control<\/a>. The president is cool with it, as long as the Space Force keeps the name and he gets to claim victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>New recruit: <\/b>A recent high school graduate enlists in the Space Force, expecting to be deployed to Mars and fight aliens with hand-held laser weapons.
