{"id":44105,"date":"2020-07-09T20:24:12","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T20:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/07\/09\/the-air-force-is-watching-the-armys-future-vertical-lift-program\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:17:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:17:23","slug":"the-air-force-is-watching-the-armys-future-vertical-lift-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2020\/07\/09\/the-air-force-is-watching-the-armys-future-vertical-lift-program\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force considers adopting the Army\u2019s Future Vertical Lift program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force is keeping an eye on the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2020\/07\/07\/us-armys-future-vertical-lift-program-will-transform-industry-so-we-must-get-it-right\/\" target=_blank>next-generation rotorcraft program<\/a>, which could fill a gap for agile airlift that might be needed in a fight against Russia and China, an Air Force general said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its large air bases vulnerable to attacks from a near-peer adversary, there\u2019s no guarantee that the Air Force will be able to rely on its current processes or equipment to transfer supplies in and out of air bases. In a war with China or Russia, the U.S. Air Force would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/singapore-airshow\/2020\/02\/11\/the-us-air-force-has-unconventional-plans-to-win-a-war-in-the-asia-pacific\/\" target=_blank>distribute its assets to bases owned by allies and partners<\/a>, cutting down the threat to aircraft usually located at the service\u2019s large installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that poses a problem for rapidly transporting materiel like spare parts and maintenance equipment to more austere locations in a time of war, said Lt. Gen. Warren Berry, the Air Force\u2019s deputy chief of staff for logistics, engineering and force protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/a-modern-nato\/2019\/08\/28\/denied-hot-meals-and-indoor-toilets-us-airmen-prepare-for-the-fog-of-war\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5628770.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Denied hot meals and indoor toilets, US airmen prepare for the fog of war<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Air Force is embracing the suck as it considers how it might fight in a war against near-peer adversaries.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know we\u2019re going to have to get after some other things that might be a different way of doing distribution and lift,\u201d he said during a July 9 event hosted by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. \u201cIt might be a different way of doing airfield recovery. It might be different equipment that\u2019s lighter and leaner that allows us to set up in a more expeditious manner with less fuel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2020\/02\/26\/the-us-air-force-just-started-up-an-effort-to-buy-a-flying-car\/\" target=_blank>Agility Prime<\/a> is certainly one [option],\u201d he said, referring to an ongoing Air Force effort to tap into the emerging commercial market for \u201cflying cars\u201d \u2014 basically, experimental transport aircraft that the service could use for logistics, search and rescue, or shuttling troops to remote locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option is the Army\u2019s future vertical lift effort, or FVL, Berry said. \u201cThat\u2019s something that we\u2019ll certainly look at, but we know that we need to do lift in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army intends to break FVL into multiple programs, which could give the Air Force multiple aircraft to pick from if it decides to buy in. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/04\/us-army-plans-to-field-a-future-long-range-assault-helicopter-by-2030\/\" target=_blank>future long-range assault aircraft<\/a> will replace the UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopter and is planned to be fielded in 2030. As part of the Army\u2019s risk-reduction effort, Bell Helicopter is developing its V-280 Valor, while a Sikorsky-Boeing team is working on its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/06\/16\/the-experimental-sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helicopter-hit-a-new-speed-milestone\/\" target=_blank>SB-1 Defiant aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/army-modernization\/2020\/03\/25\/lockheed-and-bell-will-compete-head-to-head-to-build-us-armys-future-attack-recon-aircraft\/\" target=_blank>future attack reconnaissance aircraft<\/a> would fill an existing capability gap, accomplishing the reconnaissance missions that have been performed by AH-64E Apaches teamed with Shadow drones following the retirement of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior in 2017. It\u2019s currently on track to be fielded in 2028, with Sikorsky and Bell chosen to build prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from closely watching the Army\u2019s FVL effort, the Air Force is also engaging with the Army-led Joint Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office on ways to defend U.S. bases against small drones, Berry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s going to be a demand signal on this force moving forward that we\u2019re going to have to really think through and make sure that we have them [airmen] resourced appropriately to execute that part of the air base air defense mission as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, the office rolled out a plan for the Defense Department to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2020\/06\/26\/army-selects-eight-counter-drone-systems-for-the-joint-force\/\" target=_blank>consolidate its counter-UAS technologies<\/a> from about 40 systems to a total of eight. The approved systems were chosen after an Army-led assessment and included fixed, mounted and dismounted solutions. An Air Force system known as Negation of Improvised Non-State Joint Aerial-Threats, or NINJA \u2014 which jams radio signals between the UAS and its operator \u2014 was among those selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is to align existing and future counter-UAS technology solutions to best address operational needs while applying resources more efficiently,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Sean Gainey, the office\u2019s director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berry said that the Air Force has embedded some of its personnel within the counter-UAS office to stay synchronized with the Army\u2019s efforts. \u201cSo far we\u2019re happy with where it is and where it\u2019s going,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Air Force may need
