{"id":45279,"date":"2018-04-18T16:45:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T16:45:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/18\/report-shows-popularity-of-va-loans-among-older-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:40:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:40:53","slug":"report-shows-popularity-of-va-loans-among-older-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/home-hq\/2018\/04\/18\/report-shows-popularity-of-va-loans-among-older-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Report shows popularity of VA loans among older veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans between the ages of 72 and 92 are far more likely to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/2017\/11\/13\/common-va-loan-myths-and-the-facts-to-set-them-straight\/\" target=_blank>VA-backed loan<\/a> to purchase a new home than their younger counterparts, according to a demographic study released in March by the National Association of Realtors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/research-and-statistics\/research-reports\/home-buyer-and-seller-generational-trends\" target=_blank>The report<\/a>, which measured home-buying trends over a 12-month period (July 2016-June 2017), showed that 1 in 4 of the loans used by the oldest age group surveyed came with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/2017\/11\/13\/7-reasons-to-consider-a-va-loan\/\" target=_blank>VA backing<\/a>. Other age groups fell well short:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>37 and under: 10 percent VA.<\/li><li>38 to 52: 12 percent VA.<\/li><li>53-62: 13 percent VA.<\/li><li>63-71: 19 percent VA.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s tougher to determine how those older veterans fared with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/\" target=_blank>the VA loan process<\/a> itself. The 72-to-92 age group had the highest percentage of borrowers who thought getting their loan was easier than expected (24 percent), but also had the highest percentage of those who either had a much more difficult or somewhat more difficult process than they\u2019d planned on (38 percent). Before you worry about finances, make sure your service makes you eligible.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a larger percentage of older home buyers may have access to VA loan benefits than their younger counterparts because they\u2019ve fulfilled their service requirement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.century21.com\/real-estate-agent\/profile\/kathleen-ricketts-P25360603\" target=_blank>Kathleen Ricketts<\/a>, a Realtor who teaches the National Association of Realtors\u2019 class that allows members to receive a Military Relocation Professional certification, told Military Times prior to the survey that some older veterans are less than enthused about applying for a VA loan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf they used it 20 years ago, they\u2019re horrified we\u2019ll even suggest it,\u201d said Ricketts, who operates in Chicago\u2019s northwest suburbs. They\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, it took too long. It was a mess,\u2019 et cetera. And then we have to dispel that, and say technology has changed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had a veteran tell me &#8230; that using the VA [process] was \u2018easy peasy.\u2019 I thought, OK, I\u2019ve never heard that before.
