{"id":45304,"date":"2020-11-17T22:18:57","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T22:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/17\/first-basic-training-class-nationwide-graduates-in-new-army-green-service-uniform\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:19:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:19:38","slug":"first-basic-training-class-nationwide-graduates-in-new-army-green-service-uniform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/11\/17\/first-basic-training-class-nationwide-graduates-in-new-army-green-service-uniform\/","title":{"rendered":"First basic training class nationwide graduates in new Army Green Service Uniform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new batch of soldiers at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, became the first graduating class nationwide to wear the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/08\/11\/new-army-service-uniform-will-be-issued-to-recruits-this-winter\/\">new World War II-style dress uniform<\/a>, as the service prepares for a wider roll-out in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/09\/21\/fort-sill-trainees-who-stopped-a-suicide-attempt-receive-promotions-in-basic\/\" target=_blank>Fort Sill<\/a> posted pictures Monday showing soldiers from 434th Field Artillery Brigade Class 64-20, Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion 79th Field Artillery Regiment, wearing the new Army Green Service Uniform during their graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each trainee at Fort Sill was issued one set of the new dress uniform, which included a jacket, pants, dress shirt, brown Oxfords, matching socks, their rank, two T-shirts, ties, gloves and a garrison cap, post officials said last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other basic training locations are expected to start issuing the new uniforms by December, service officials involved in the effort have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most soldiers should be able to purchase their Army greens across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2020\/08\/11\/new-app-connects-military-community-to-what-they-need-on-army-garrisons\/\">Army and Air Force Exchanges<\/a> locations by March. The new uniforms, which cost roughly $500, won\u2019t become mandatory until October 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enlisted soldiers receive an annual uniform allowance of roughly $460. Although that won\u2019t quite cover the cost of a new service uniform, Army officials said the new uniform is made of higher quality material and should last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/08\/11\/new-army-service-uniform-will-be-issued-to-recruits-this-winter\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/usarecgreens.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New Army service uniform will be issued to recruits this winter<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">By next spring, the World War II-styled garments should be available at Army and Air Force Exchanges across the service\u2019s installations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the Army also hopes the price will decrease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn introducing a new product, the price point is going to be a little higher,\u201d Col. Stephen Thomas, a project manager involved in rolling out the new Army greens, said this summer. \u201cAs we transition this program to sustainment, if you will, that price point will go down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Green Service Uniform items will have an expected life of six years, compared to the current Army service uniform\u2019s life of four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army Uniform Board is also meeting Wednesday, for the second time this year, to discuss the Army greens&#8217; maternity variation, which is currently expected to resemble the smock-style of uniform that has been issued since the 1980s. The board will discuss whether to modernize the maternity uniform or continue with the current style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"
