{"id":45642,"date":"2021-08-03T16:51:27","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T16:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/08\/03\/the-armys-buying-500-million-covid-vaccine-doses-but-theyre-not-for-soldiers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:40:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:40:02","slug":"the-armys-buying-500-million-covid-vaccine-doses-but-theyre-not-for-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/08\/03\/the-armys-buying-500-million-covid-vaccine-doses-but-theyre-not-for-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Army\u2019s buying 500 million COVID vaccine doses, but they\u2019re not for soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army recently inked a $3.5 billion contract with Pfizer Inc. for the pharmaceutical company to produce 500 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those shots are not planned for soldiers\u2019 shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the contract award states, they are for \u201cinternational donation\u201d and procurement is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2022, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Newsroom\/Contracts\/Contract\/Article\/2716710\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pentagon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan is for those half-a-billion doses to be distributed to more than 100 countries, most in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur partnership with the U.S. government will help bring hundreds of millions of doses of our vaccine to the poorest countries around the world as quickly as possible,\u201d Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-provide-500-million-doses-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">June announcement<\/a> of the plan. \u201cCOVID-19 has impacted everyone, everywhere, and to win the battle against this pandemic, we must ensure expedited access to vaccines for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/06\/22\/humans-are-now-testing-the-armys-new-covid-vaccine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6125698.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Humans now testing the Army\u2019s catch-all COVID vaccine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The vaccine could provide better immunity and longer protection against all strains.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army isn\u2019t the only entity shooting for \u201cvaccine diplomacy\u201d efforts to help maintain, strengthen or build ties across the globe. Both Russia and China have been pushing their own COVID-19 vaccines to other nations as they become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was one of three early vaccines distributed for mass use in the United States to combat the global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.07.28.21261295v1\" target=\"_blank\">A study<\/a> by researchers in Singapore, released last week, showed that the vaccine is \u201chighly effective\u201d at protecting recipients from severe disease if they are infected with even the rapidly spreading Delta variant of the virus after taking the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study has not yet been peer-reviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Public Health England study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in July found that the Pfizer vaccine was 88 percent effective at preventing severe disease related to infection with the Delta variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fda-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-approval-antivaxxer-hesitancy-11627838932\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/a> announced this week that it would speed up its review of Pfizer\u2019s vaccine for full approval. The vaccine, along with its cohorts, are under Emergency Use Authorization, meaning they are allowed to be used, despite not having had the full standard vaccine review normally conducted by the FDA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As recently as April, news reports showed that even some European Union nations were turning to China and Russia for vaccines when they could not receive what they needed from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has reported that it was providing its Sinovac vaccine to more than 80 nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet both peer adversaries have had their stumbles in vaccine generosity. The China-made vaccine has been shown to only prevent symptomatic disease in 51 percent of the vaccinated, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6086028\/chinese-russian-covid-19-vaccines-geopolitics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time.com<\/a>. By comparison, the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines have shown rates near or above 90 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia put its vaccine Sputnik V into close to 70 countries, but neither the World Health Organization nor the European Medicines Agency has authorized it for emergency use, due to lack of access to trials data, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6086028\/chinese-russian-covid-19-vaccines-geopolitics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even as the Army spends billions on producing and distributing the vaccine in outreach efforts, its own scientists are working on a way to make tailored vaccines such as Pfizer\u2019s obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Times reported in June that scientists at the Army\u2019s infectious diseases branch at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Maryland, had tested a \u201ccatch-all\u201d vaccine that could protect against current and future strains of coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By that time, researchers had already successfully tested the vaccine in mice, monkeys, horses, hamsters and sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early human testing has started and data sets on immunity are expected in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know it\u2019s safe and tolerable but we don\u2019t know yet the immunity it confers,\u201d said Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, director of the
