{"id":46107,"date":"2018-05-15T20:39:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T20:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/15\/report-some-states-regions-buck-trend-of-good-economic-news-for-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:41:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:41:57","slug":"report-some-states-regions-buck-trend-of-good-economic-news-for-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/05\/15\/report-some-states-regions-buck-trend-of-good-economic-news-for-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Some states, regions buck trend of good economic news for veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overall uptick in the national economy may be good news for most veterans, but some states are bucking that trend, according to a new report from researchers at Purdue University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten states \u2015 California, Washington, Texas, Kansas, North Carolina, Montana, New Mexico, New Jersey, Arkansas and South Dakota \u2015 are seeing increases in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/12\/06\/number-of-homeless-veterans-nationwide-rises-for-first-time-in-seven-years\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">homeless veterans<\/a>, according to 2017 statistics cited in the report. And while <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/news\/employment\/2018\/05\/04\/vet-unemployment-falls-in-april\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover523296\">unemployment among veterans<\/a> has dropped, there are regions where veteran unemployment is still higher than that of civilians of similar age, including six western states, five northeastern states and three southeastern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, \u201cMeasuring Our Communities: The State of Military and Veteran Families in the United States,\u201d pulls together military-specific data from more than 30 nationally representative sources, including government sources such as the Census Bureau, the Veterans Affairs department, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It uses the <a href=\"http:\/\/measuringcommunities.org\/pages\/home\/1\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMeasuring Communities\u201d online tool, <\/a>which launched two years ago to facilitate access to data for government, nonprofit and other organizations that want to provide services to veterans and military families in their communities. The tool helps provide insights about all geographic regions of the U.S., often down to the county level.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2018\/04\/18\/could-changes-to-tap-curb-veteran-suicide\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoyaSearsBill1-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Could changes to TAP curb veteran suicide?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Transforming the way service members are prepared for life after the military could curb veteran unemployment, homelessness and suicide. Or, at least that\u2019s the hope behind a new bill being introduced in Congress Thursday that seeks to strengthen the Defense Department\u2019s mandatory Transition Assistance Program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This report uses a snapshot of data from previous years, but the data that is part of the tool itself updates each time the sources provide new figures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The finding that some states are bucking the national trend, with more unemployment or homelessness among veterans, \u201cmade me want to ask more questions,\u201d said Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth, director of Purdue\u2019s Military Family Research Institute and co-author of the report along with Purdue\u2019s Kathy Broniarcyzk, who is MFRI\u2019s senior director for outreach and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One recommendation by the authors was to pay attention to areas where the number of homeless veterans is increasing and find ways to reverse the trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to look at the data over time, Wadsworth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWars have long tails,\u201d she said, noting that the needs of Vietnam veterans have not yet peaked. \u201cThese veterans will be with us for the rest of their lives. It\u2019s important to know how they\u2019re doing, and how things are changing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 60 organizations throughout the country are using the \u201cMeasuring Communities\u201d online tool. One group, Wadsworth said, called the institute about providing employment help for younger veterans, not knowing that in their county, unemployment was much higher among older veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were about to spend a lot of energy \u2026 focusing their efforts on the wrong kind of employment problems,\u201d she said, speaking during a panel discussion Monday about the findings of the report and the uses of the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The executive director of a northern Virginia nonprofit used the tool to show a disproportionate amount of aging veterans in her area weren\u2019t getting the services they needed, said Chris Ford, CEO of the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations. This data helped her apply for, and receive, a $68,000 grant \u2015 worth nearly seven times the nonprofit\u2019s revenue the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Military-connected individuals live in all but three of the 3,142 counties in the U.S.<\/li><li>More than half of U.S. counties are designated as a \u201cHealth Professional Shortage Area\u201d by the Department of Health and Human Services, indicating shortages in at least one type of primary care, dental care or mental health providers, This puts civilians and military families at risk for limited access to health care.<br><\/li><li>Nearly 1,000 counties have a shortage of at least one type of mental health care professional.<br><\/li><li>Texas and California have the largest numbers of veterans with disabilities, but there are 100 counties where more than 40 percent of the veteran population has disabilities.<br><\/li><li>The three states with the highest percentage of 100 percent disabled veterans are Connecticut (4.6 percent); Pennsylvania (3.9 percent) and Illinois (3.7 percent).<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terri Tanielian, senior behavioral scientist for Rand Corp., cautioned that those using data should become \u201ca bit of a skeptic\u201d and should ask whether the information is \u201cenough for me to understand what\u2019s happening in Community X?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a huge proponent of data-driven decision making,\u201d Tanielian said, noting that the tool helps make data \u201cdigestible and usable.\u201d But she said, \u201cI\u2019m also very cautious and concerned
