FORT MEADE, Md. \u2014\u00a0The carjacking suspect who crashed a stolen car near one of Fort Meade’s gates Wednesday night was caught by police after hiding in a storm drain under a bush overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said Dante Small of Hagerstown, driving a stolen car, was pursued by Anne Arundel County police on Rochenbach Road at 9 p.m. Wednesday.\u00a0He drove through the access point to Fort Meade and crashed through a fence-line on the interior of the installation. He then fled on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Small, 41, managed to evade law enforcement and hide in a storm drain. He remained there overnight. When he emerged from the storm drain, he was taken into custody, said officials at Fort Meade on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident began as a carjacking in Baltimore. Anne Arundel County police spent hours searching for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During that time schools in the area and Fort Meade operations were affected. Fort Meade operated under Reduced Operations, meaning only mission essential personnel should report for work and only mission essential operations were underway. The operating status also applied to NSA buildings on Fort Meade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Rochenbach gate was closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All Directorate of Family, Morale and Welfare operations, including child development centers, were also closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meade High School, Meade Middle School, Macarthur Middle School, Manor View Elementary School, Pershing Hill Elementary School and West Meade Early Education Center were closed to students and staff for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents were asked to remain indoors and report any suspicious activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around 10:45 a.m. police tweeted that they had found the suspect in the woods: “Subject from last nights incident is in custody. He was located attempting to hide in the woods in the area.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drain where Small was found was\u00a0close to where 400 service several members live,\u00a0according to Fort Meade officials. The area is next to one of two access control points, and there has been no need to guard that point, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Baltimore City Police took Small into custody. Officials did not locate a weapon and cannot say at this point whether or not Small was armed during the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities are assessing whether or not federal charges could be brought against Small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fort Meade has resumed normal operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
