Mahdi Al-Husseini\u2019s Aura device won the fifth \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/unum.nsin.us\/xviii-airborne\" target=\"_blank\">Dragon\u2019s Lair Innovation Challenge<\/a>\u201d put on by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/28\/this-army-major-may-have-just-solved-your-range-time-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">XVIII Airborne Corps<\/a> at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on Monday. The challenge pits soldiers in a competition to present an innovative solution for all types of military problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aura device\u2019s hardware includes a camera and a touch screen tablet. But it\u2019s the algorithms and software that Al-Husseini and his project partner, hometown friend and fellow Georgia Institute of Technology alumnus Joshua Barnett, built that make the device work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Husseini flies a Black Hawk helicopter and serves as a platoon leader for Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, out of Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/11\/19\/this-army-specialist-came-up-with-simple-fix-for-moving-heavy-stuff\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/army-forklift.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This Army specialist came up with simple fix for moving heavy stuff<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Dragon Innovation Challenge is a recently launched, quarterly competition for the best solution to Army problems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s right, he\u2019s not an XVIII Airborne Corps soldier. He\u2019s the first non-Corps soldier to win the Dragon\u2019s Lair competition, said Col. Marygian Barnes\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, a student pilot flies with their instructor, who provides valuable information and feedback both in-flight and post-flight. But once a pilot goes solo there\u2019s very little feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He mentioned it to his then-operations officer and mentor, Army Capt. Jeremy Bowling, who encouraged him to enter it into the Dragon\u2019s Lair competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, the Black hawk has a lot more gauges than a commercial single-engine propeller plane. Marygian Barnes\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what good is the data if it isn\u2019t easy to use?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPilots don\u2019t need more data,\u201d Al-Husseini told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or at least what you deliver a pilot has to be relevant and easily digestible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want pilots to interface as little as possible,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is not supposed to be another thing for the pilot to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideally, the system\u2019s recordings would follow a pilot throughout their career so they could see weak points and strong points, ways to improve and how they\u2019re performing over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of being told they\u2019re \u201coverarching\u201d or \u201cunder arching\u201d to their spot, they can see virtually how that\u2019s happening and how to adjust their maneuvers for an objectively better move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, Al-Husseini said that trainers could compare pilot data in the same platforms across the service and spot areas to focus on for training, remediation or even technological improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The device doesn\u2019t replace human instructors by a long shot, he said. Marygian Barnes\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Husseini has evaluated data from those tests: assuming the device could reduce flight time for corrections by 20 percent, that could shave eight hours off a normally 40-hour military rotary wing progression, which saves at least $33,600 per pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar savings are possible for civilian fixed and rotary wing fliers, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Husseini presented his tech pitch to the \u201cShark Tank-style\u201d Dragon\u2019s Lair competition and got immediate feedback from AI-expert panelists and a suggestion from one enlisted soldier to adapt the tool to ground vehicles such as Strykers, Bradleys or Abrams tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He won the competition by two points out of a total possible 275 points. The runner up was Lt. Col. Jason Harlan of 3rd Infantry Division, who pitched an Abrams tank towing system to the 11 panelists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for winning the competition, he got a four-day liberty pass, his pick of Army training schools \u2014 he chose freefall parachute school \u2014 and a Meritorious Service Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Husseini already has a patent pending on the device, and a side company with his friend Barnett to develop it for civilian use. But, he emphasized, if the Army or Defense Department decides to use it, the company would provide an irrevocable license for military use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wants the tech shared widely to benefit military pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Correction: The story has been updated to accurately reflect the billets for Capt.
