{"id":47064,"date":"2019-11-22T21:07:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T21:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/22\/army-aviators-ask-for-more-comfort-less-workload-from-future-vertical-lift-teams\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:31:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:31:07","slug":"army-aviators-ask-for-more-comfort-less-workload-from-future-vertical-lift-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/11\/22\/army-aviators-ask-for-more-comfort-less-workload-from-future-vertical-lift-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Army aviators ask for more comfort, less workload from future vertical lift teams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/08\/12\/four-takeaways-from-the-new-tradoc-commander\/\" target=_blank>Army Futures Command<\/a> introduced about a dozen soldiers to technology demonstrators for the service\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/09\/06\/heres-how-army-aviators-must-prepare-for-large-scale-combat-operations\/\" target=_blank>future vertical lift<\/a> program last week, giving them an opportunity to provide input prior to the evaluations and fly-offs over the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers spent a full day each with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/01\/the-v-280-tilt-rotor-aircraft-could-change-the-way-air-assault-troops-operate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bell\u2019s V-280 Valor <\/a>tilt-rotor aircraft in Arlington, Texas, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/21\/sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helo-takes-first-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sikorsky-Boeing\u2019s SB-1 Defiant <\/a>coaxial helicopter in West Palm Beach, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site visits included flying simulators and aircraft familiarizations. Two of the soldiers who participated spoke with Army Times about the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never seen anything like it,\u201d said Chief Warrant Officer 2 William Bogert, a UH-60 Black Hawk pilot with the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The speed and range offered by the FVL program could be the biggest game changers, he noted. The V-280, for instance, has an advertised cruising speed of 280 knots and a range of 800 nautical miles, which is nearly double that of the current utility and assault helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can be on a team sooner; we can get out of there faster,\u201d Bogert said. \u201cWe can go places that we have never went before. So it just really allows us in Army aviation to expand our mission set and better support the ground force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visits are known as \u201csoldier touchpoints,&#8221; but they usually come at a later stage in the acquisition process to test equipment, according to Sarah Tate, a spokeswoman for the Army\u2019s FVL Cross Functional Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is actually implement this into the provision process,&#8221; Tate said. \u201cWhere they can help make decisions before we get to a finished product.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The V-280 Valor and SB-1 Defiant are demonstrators that will inform the Army as it moves toward actually selecting vendors to produce and later buy new aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose are not going to become Army aircraft,\u201d noted James Thomson, deputy director of Army Futures Command\u2019s FVL cross functional team. \u201cIt\u2019s the knowledge and the data points and the technology &#8230; that will allow us to begin a procurement process for future aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft aren\u2019t necessarily technological leaps on their own, but instead combine technologies that have been maturing over the last couple decades, like advanced composite structures for lighter aircraft and advanced rotor control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting all that technology together into one platform is what allows \u201ca leap ahead in performance and capability,&#8221; Thomson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant-FF-032119-pr02B.JPG.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Army Futures Command)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldier touchpoints trip last week signals a shift in how the Army is thinking about acquisitions overall, Bogert said, adding that trips like this will ultimately cut down on superfluous or counter-intuitive designs that don\u2019t work well for line pilots flying combat missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnyone who has been in it always had a piece of equipment that you just didn\u2019t understand or didn\u2019t make sense,\u201d Bogert added. \u201cAnd what this does to bring the end user into that design process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army aviators met with the engineers and test pilots working on the FVL programs and then went down to the technology demonstrators to offer what they saw as strengths and weaknesses for both aircraft, said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Shawn Huebner, an Apache pilot with the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were able to sit in the aircraft to see what it actually looks like,&#8221; Huebner said. \u201cWe have a day-to-day operator view, and they were very interested in taking copious notes on our input, to hopefully implement what we said and to also give us an answer back to why they decided to make a move or design it the way they did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aviators declined to discuss specifics but said that their advice to the two teams revolved around end-user issues like reducing pilot workload and maximizing comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to be sitting there for hours and hours on end,\u201d Bogert said. \u201cIt helps with fatigue to keep the pilot comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aviators were also able to experience the simulators for both aircraft \u2014 a place where pilots spend a large chunk of time. That helps to &#8220;identify possible problems ahead of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reduction of workload has also been a major focal point for the manufacturers, because it allows the pilot to be more involved in their mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd more involved in being able to get a better reconnaissance view than trying to conduct reconnaissance while in a hostile environment where there may be &#8230; issues flying, or having issues with visibility,\u201d Huebner said. \u201cSo, reducing pilot workload is the best and most significant thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all the new equipment, the technology demonstrators and their accompanying simulators weren\u2019t overly difficult for the aviators to get comfortable with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s easier for us to transition into as experience pilots,\u201d Huebner added. \u201cDidn\u2019t take a long time to pick up on either system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two technology demonstrators will inform what the Army is calling a Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft and a Future Long Range Assault Aircraft, which the Army wants to field in about 2028 and 2030, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting for me to be able to specifically stand face-to-face with the man developing the aircraft,\u201d Bogert said. \u201cHe asked me what I want, and then he &#8230; gives us what we want. It gets us the most efficient, most convenient product.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were completely open with us,\u201d he added. \u201cLet us crawl around it, touch it, feel it, and just give them our honest opinion.
