{"id":47500,"date":"2018-04-24T14:52:15","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T14:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/24\/va-secretary-nomination-in-doubt-as-allegations-of-misbehavior-emerge\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:56:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:56:15","slug":"va-secretary-nomination-in-doubt-as-allegations-of-misbehavior-emerge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/24\/va-secretary-nomination-in-doubt-as-allegations-of-misbehavior-emerge\/","title":{"rendered":"VA secretary nomination in doubt as allegations of misbehavior emerge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 White House officials on Tuesday defended Veterans Affairs secretary nominee Ronny Jackson as Senate officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/24\/senate-postpones-confirmation-hearing-for-va-secretary-nominee-casting-doubt-over-his-future\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">signaled serious concerns<\/a> about whether to ever allow him a confirmation hearing for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/02\/white-house-doctor-could-face-the-most-contentious-va-confirmation-process-ever\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">whose surprise nomination has been shrouded in questions<\/a> about his lack of experience with the massive veterans bureaucracy, was scheduled to appear before the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee on Wednesday before an abrupt postponement on Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter to the White House Tuesday morning, committee chairman Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and ranking member Jon Tester, D-Mont., requested the administration turn over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/09\/va-secretary-nominee-brushes-off-criticism-over-inexperience\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">all documents related to Jackson\u2019s work<\/a> at the White House medical office and during his Navy career, including allegations of misconduct and poor leadership against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement to the press, the two senators said they had postponed the hearing \u201cin light of new information presented to the committee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They declined to specify what the allegations are against Jackson, a 23-year naval officer who deployed to Iraq as a combat surgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe take very seriously our constitutional duty to thoroughly and carefully vet each nominee sent to the Senate for confirmation,\u201d the senators said. \u201cWe will continue looking into these serious allegations and have requested additional information from the White House to enable the committee to conduct a full review.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/11\/vets-groups-and-lawmakers-say-theyre-against-it-but-what-does-privatization-of-veterans-affairs-really-mean\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_13102205629.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Vets groups and lawmakers say they\u2019re against it \u2014 but what does \u2018privatization\u2019 of Veterans Affairs really mean?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The term will command much of the debate at the new VA secretary&#039;s confirmation hearing, but different groups have different definitions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rumors of concerns about Jackson\u2019s handling of pain medications have been circulating on Capitol Hill for the last week, since the White House formally submitted Jackson\u2019s nomination to the Senate. In addition, other news reports have raised questions of improper alcohol use and lack of professionalism in the White House medical office under Jackson\u2019s leadership there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a statement Tuesday morning, White House officials said they stand by Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdmiral Jackson has been on the front lines of deadly combat and saved the lives of many others in service to this country,\u201d Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s served as the physician to three presidents \u2014 Republican and Democrat \u2014 and been praised by them all. Admiral Jackson\u2019s record of strong, decisive leadership is exactly what\u2019s needed at the VA to ensure our veterans receive the benefits they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson, a Navy rear admiral and who currently serves as the White House physician, was tapped for the VA post last month after President Donald Trump fired then-Secretary David Shulkin over Twitter amid ethics concerns and department infighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jackson\u2019s lack of experience with VA \u2014 or managing any other large health care system \u2014 drew immediate concerns from veterans groups and lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals involved in the process also raised questions about how thoroughly Jackson was vetted before being asked to take over the 375,000-employee VA bureaucracy. In the weeks before Shulkin\u2019s firing, Jackson was interviewed as a potential VA under secretary for health but rejected because the White House pulled him back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the committee announcement, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., took to the Senate floor to blast the Trump administration for it\u2019s \u201cpoor record\u201d of handling nominees over the last year, and questioned the \u201ctroubling allegations\u201d against Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow did he get through the process with all of these allegations, not even being made public?\u201d Schumer said. \u201cMy guess, not proper vetting. I wasn\u2019t there, but it\u2019s speculative that maybe one day that the president, who we know acts on impulse, had this nominee in the room, his doctor, and said, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s put you up without any vetting.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senators did not announce a new date for Jackson\u2019s confirmation hearing, raising doubts about whether one will happen at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shulkin\u2019s firing was the second time in less than four years the department lost its leader in disgrace, and the Trump administration for the last year has had difficulty filling a host of high-profile VA jobs. Now, with Jackson\u2019s confirmation delay, the department faces an uncertain timetable for when its critical leadership posts will be filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump appointed Defense Department Under Secretary for Personnel and Readiness Robert Wilkie to take over as acting secretary after Shulkin\u2019s dismissal, with an eye toward him filling that role only for a few weeks or months. In doing so, they bypassed Deputy VA Secretary Thomas Bowman, a move that several veterans groups insist may have violated federal law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenatorIsakson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenatorIsakson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenatorTester?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenatorTester<\/a> out with a letter to Trump this morning requesting any documents &quot;regarding allegations or incidents involving Read Adm.
