{"id":47674,"date":"2019-12-01T16:50:45","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T16:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/01\/after-75-years-a-war-hero-gets-frances-highest-honor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:58:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:58:57","slug":"after-75-years-a-war-hero-gets-frances-highest-honor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/12\/01\/after-75-years-a-war-hero-gets-frances-highest-honor\/","title":{"rendered":"After 75 years, a war hero gets France\u2019s highest honor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Glenn Pitts lived a quiet life after World War II, but a friend\u2019s tip led to the 94-year-old receiving the Legion of Honor for his part in liberating France. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glenn Pitts has been a laundry manager, a building contractor and a Jacksonville landlord. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday (Nov. 22), the French government named him a knight of the Legion of Honor, its highest distinction, for his part in liberating France from Nazi occupation 75 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know what we owe you and your brothers,\u201d Laurent Gallissot, France\u2019s consul general in Miami, told the 94-year-old Army veteran during a ceremony at Jacksonville City Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pitts, the diplomat said, was \u201ca true hero and a great soldier.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 40-person audience filled less than half of the City Council chambers, but praise for the veteran was heartfelt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we should all be forever grateful,\u201d Council Vice President Tommy Hazouri told Pitts, who lives in the Westside\u2019s Woodstock Park area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France decided in 2004 \u2014 the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landing \u2014 to award the medal to any U.S. veteran who had fought on French soil and requested the honor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gallissot said his office has presented maybe 2,000 since then, some to men whose own families know very little about their experiences in the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2019\/10\/01\/a-94-year-old-wwii-veteran-receives-frances-top-honor\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19272756830032.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A 94-year-old WWII veteran receives France\u2019s top honor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A 94-year-old World War II veteran from Indiana has received France&#039;s highest military honor for his wartime service.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combat veterans all experienced some trauma, Gallissot said, and some just prefer not to share those memories. Like Pitts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe lost a lot of people, so I don\u2019t talk about it that much,\u201d Pitts told an audience that included people dressed to represent veterans\u2019 groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broad strokes of his war service were interesting enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drafted when he was 18, the Eastman, Ga. native learned to operate a water-cooled .30-cal. machine gun that could fire hundreds of rounds per minute. He was a private in the Army\u2019s 63rd Infantry Division when he was deployed to the French Mediterranean port of Marseilles in December 1944. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of five months that followed, he said Thursday, 120 days were spent \u201con the line,\u201d in combat zones that by February 1945 had advanced to the German border at the Saar River. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time troops crossed the river on a rope bridge, he was a 19-year-old squad leader. He would have still been a private, but his squad leader had been wounded and he became the replacement, jumping the ranks to sergeant in one step. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was still in Germany when the Nazi government surrendered in May 1945 and was reassigned to a Signal Corps unit where he finished out his service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in civilian life, he got a job, raised a family and built some houses. He still rents some of his houses, one of them to the friend who helped him apply for the award after reading about another Legion of Honor recipient. He and Pitts\u2019 family clapped hard to see the quiet man being honored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m so overjoyed to see him getting this,\u201d said his daughter,
