{"id":47870,"date":"2021-01-30T00:38:15","date_gmt":"2021-01-30T00:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/30\/soldiers-tried-to-drink-alcohol-in-the-field-but-ingested-antifreeze-initial-probe-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:45:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:45:06","slug":"soldiers-tried-to-drink-alcohol-in-the-field-but-ingested-antifreeze-initial-probe-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/30\/soldiers-tried-to-drink-alcohol-in-the-field-but-ingested-antifreeze-initial-probe-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldiers tried to drink alcohol in the field, but ingested antifreeze, initial probe says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/29\/unknown-substance-injures-11-soldiers-2-critically-during-fort-bliss-training\/\" target=_blank>Eleven soldiers hospitalized<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/12\/08\/virus-outbreak-at-fort-bliss-alarms-new-mexico-leaders\/\" target=_blank>Fort Bliss, Texas<\/a>, believed they were drinking alcohol on the last day of a 10-day field exercise, but instead ingested antifreeze, according to toxicology tests and an initial inquiry breifed to reporters Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The troops were admitted to a hospital Thursday morning \u2014 two in critical condition \u2014 after they exhibited symptoms consistent with the consumption of ethylene glycol, better known as antifreeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers, all of whom were assigned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/02\/got-to-fix-that-some-unit-ops-tempos-higher-than-peaks-of-afghan-iraq-wars-army-chief-says\/\" target=_blank>11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade<\/a>, are still being treated at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center on Fort Bliss. Two remain seriously ill and have been admitted to the intensive care unit, but their conditions have improved since earlier Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All soldiers have \u201cshown signs of significant improvement,\u201d said Col. Shawna Scully, deputy commander for medical services at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. \u201cFour soldiers will be released later this afternoon to their families. &#8230; For the rest of the patients, it will depend on their progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How they got the substance is under investigation, according to Lt. Col. Allie Payne, a spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/30\/coronavirus-hits-brigade-at-ntc-as-home-post-deals-with-surge-in-cases\/\">1st Armored Division<\/a>. It is also against Army regulations to drink alcohol during field training, she added. It\u2019s unclear whether others in the unit also drank the substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The troops were brought to the hospital between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday. When exactly the alcohol consumption occurred was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne patient arrived in the emergency room with initial symptoms,\u201d Scully said. \u201cShortly after that was followed by a second. At that point, military medical leadership requested that all members of the unit be brought in for support and assessments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antifreeze poisoning can damage the kidneys and lead to organ failure. Ingestion of the substance is treated with medications that help filter it out of a patient\u2019s system. In extreme cases, that filtering is done through dialysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One soldier required an intubation, Scully said, meaning a tube was inserted down their throat to help them breathe. It has since been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear how much antifreeze was consumed by each soldier, a group that included one warrant officer, two noncommissioned officers and eight enlisted soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The troops had been at McGregor Range near Fort Bliss for a routine readiness exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air defense units, like the brigade these soldiers belonged to, are among the most frequently deployed in the Army. The 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade operates Patriot system batteries that intercept enemy missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by Army CID special agents and a separate administrative investigation launched by Fort Bliss senior mission commander Maj. Gen. Sean C.
