{"id":47873,"date":"2023-01-02T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/02\/army-inspecting-all-facilities-for-mold-other-issues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:10:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:10:53","slug":"army-inspecting-all-facilities-for-mold-other-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/01\/02\/army-inspecting-all-facilities-for-mold-other-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Army inspecting all facilities for mold &#038; other issues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is continuing its seemingly uphill battle against mold and other ailments affecting its buildings as we move into 2023, after extending the deadline on the 100% inspection of facilities it ordered in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/10\/11\/army-will-check-mold-all-barracks-and-facilities-service-grapples-housing-conditions.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced the inspection<\/a> after a series of reports by Military.com revealed endemic mold issues impacting soldiers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2022\/09\/14\/fort-stewart-urges-room-checks-after-video-showed-mold-encrusted-walls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Stewart, Georgia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/08\/06\/1200-fort-bragg-soldiers-to-be-relocated-from-unlivable-barracks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Bragg, North Carolina<\/a>. At Fort Bragg, the conditions at antiquated barracks on Smoke Bomb Hill were so dire that 1,200 soldiers were relocated a week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/08\/04\/michael-grinstons-quiet-war-help-make-army-more-lethal-wokeness-hysterics-be-damned.html\" target=\"_blank\">after a surprise inspection<\/a> from the Army\u2019s top NCO, Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Grinston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the inspection of all facilities was supposed to be complete by Nov. 18, according to an internal Army order obtained by Army Times. But that proved too short of a timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/12\/01\/army-buildings-need-work-but-these-two-bases-need-the-most\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kuwait-renovations.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army buildings need work, but these two bases need the most<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The report&#039;s data collection ended in 2020. Added wear and tear, and inflation likely has increased the need.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service extended the deadline to Jan. 18, an Army spokesperson said. The later deadline will allow local officials across the service more time, and it will also leave time for service-level facilities planners to consider the new data when updating its Facilities Investment Plan at a major conference in late January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of January 2023, we\u2019re going to come together with all the senior commanders and we\u2019re going to go over every installation\u2019s [facilities] priorities across the active Army,\u201d said Paul Schaefer, a deputy director of logistics at Army Materiel Command who leads the investment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that the new data collected as part of the review \u2014 which will use a new system of metrics intended to assist analysts \u2014 will help the service decide which projects need to happen first and \u201cis tied directly into the budgeting process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schaefer added that the command is working to improve its analytics so officials can more accurately project facility deterioration and future maintenance costs. The service has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/12\/01\/army-buildings-need-work-but-these-two-bases-need-the-most\/\" target=\"_blank\">more than $19 billion<\/a> in deferred maintenance costs alone, according to a partial study conducted by the Congressional Budget Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have so little money to get after all these problems,\u201d explained the facilities plan lead. \u201cWe need to make sure that we are laser-focused and getting after those problems&#8230;[as effectively and as] efficiently as
