Davis Jr. eventually became a Tuskegee Airman and the Air Force\u2019s first black general, but when he was just a cadet in 1932 at the United States Military Academy, no one wanted to be his roommate, let alone be his friend, or even speak to him unless absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, West Point\u2019s newest barracks, which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday on the New York campus, is named after the trailblazer who once described himself as \u201dan invisible man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tomorrow is the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DavisBarracks?src=hash\">#DavisBarracks<\/a> dedication. Davis Jr. entered West Point in 1932 as its only black cadet and spent the next four years shunned. He roomed alone, and no one befriended him. The future Tuskegee Airman and trailblazing Air Force general later said he was &quot;an invisible man.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis was virtually ignored while at West Point, treated similarly to the coordinated, unofficial punishment cadets carried out against those who had violated the honor code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was to be silenced solely because the cadets did not want blacks at West Point. Their only purpose was to freeze me out,\u201d he wrote in his 1991 autobiography. \u201cWhat they did not realize was that I was stubborn enough to put up with their treatment to reach the goal I had come to obtain.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis was one of only two black line officers in the Army when he graduated. His father was the other \u2014 Benjamin O. Benjamin O. Davis, West Point Class of &#039;36.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The younger Davis attended all-black pre-flight training at Alabama\u2019s Tuskegee Institute in 1941, rising to command the 99th Fighter Squadron at Tuskegee Army Air Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He transferred to the Air Force when it was first stood up in 1947, rising to become the service\u2019s first black four-star. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He received his fourth star 28 years after he retired, in a 1998 White House ceremony attended by fellow Tuskegee Airmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe earned this honor a long time ago,\u201d President Clinton said at that ceremony, calling Davis \u201ca hero in war, a leader in peace, a pioneer for freedom, opportunity and basic human dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis died in 2002. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gen.
