the weight of troops&#8217; body armor, according to a recent government study. <br\/> <br\/>The study by the  <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/690\/684514.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">Government Accountability Office<\/a>\u00a0noted joint efforts to reduce\u00a0the weight of body armor and listed multiple options in the works to further decrease the load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, released this month, evaluated work done by\u00a0both the Army and Marines since 2003 to protective\u00a0aspects of body armor while reducing the weight of the equipment.\u00a0On average, body armor weighs about 27 pounds, according to the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">study by the  <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/690\/684515.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">Government Accountability Office<\/a>.  <br\/> <br\/>That makes up a good chunk of the average total load of 117 pounds being carried by Marines and 119\u00a0pounds being carried by soldiers, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those total loads don&#8217;t necessarily match well with the Army&#8217;s 1990\u00a0recommendations that a fighting load not exceed 48 pounds and a marching load\u00a0be under 72 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with both services told government researchers that the previous\u00a0standards might be outdated and &#8220;not reflective&#8221; of current body armor standards.\u00a0In 2016, the Army developed a plan to reduce the weight of hard armor plates by\u00a02 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both branches have made updates and redesigns to soft armor vests that have\u00a0&#8220;resulted in or will result in&#8221; a cut of 6 to 7 pounds, according to the report.\u00a0As researchers try to lighten the load the troops carry, they are also looking at\u00a0more innovative ways to haul gear in and around the battlefield.\u00a0 <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report noted Marine tests using aerial delivery that could bring 700 pounds\u00a0of gear to units in hard-to-reach places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has ongoing testing and development on smaller all-terrain vehicles and\u00a0autonomous support systems that follow soldiers and carry their supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other efforts include lighter batteries and reduced battery usage, along with lighter\u00a0ammunition using polymer casings and
