{"id":48276,"date":"2022-09-15T14:55:44","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T14:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/15\/army-chinooks-once-again-take-flight-after-fleet-grounded-in-august\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:07:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:07:27","slug":"army-chinooks-once-again-take-flight-after-fleet-grounded-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2022\/09\/15\/army-chinooks-once-again-take-flight-after-fleet-grounded-in-august\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Chinooks once again take flight after fleet grounded in August"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 60% of the Army\u2019s CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet have been cleared to operate in training and missions, according to a statement from the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The return to duty comes after the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/08\/31\/army-grounds-entire-ch-47-chinook-helicopter-fleet-over-engine-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> in August that its entire fleet of Chinooks was grounded \u201cout of an abundance of caution.\u201d The move came after an undisclosed number of engine fires took place, which first was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-army-grounds-entire-fleet-of-chinook-helicopters-11661894466\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> by the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThough the number could fluctuate day to day, this number continues to increase daily with ongoing logbook records review and a standard leak-check maintenance procedure outlined in an Aviation Safety Action Message published on 2 September,\u201d Jason Waggoner, a spokesperson for the Army, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/08\/31\/army-grounds-entire-ch-47-chinook-helicopter-fleet-over-engine-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> to Army Times after the news of the engine fires first broke, a spokesperson for the service said the engine fires could be attributed to fuel leaks, and the Army had identified the problem with the leaks and had already started to solve the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honeywell International, which manufactures the specific engine for the CH-47 Chinook, released a statement following the announcement that the fleet was being grounded. The company said that O-rings not produced by the company were to blame for the fuel leakages that turned into engine fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHoneywell helped discover that O-rings not meeting Honeywell design specifications had been installed in some T55 engines during routine and scheduled maintenance at an Army Depot,\u201d a statement from Honeywell said. \u201cIt is believed these suspect O-Rings have been identified and isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 70 of the service\u2019s 400 Chinooks had the faulty O-ring,
