{"id":48328,"date":"2018-07-10T19:15:54","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T19:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/10\/va-secretary-nominee-promises-protections-for-transgender-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:07:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:07:15","slug":"va-secretary-nominee-promises-protections-for-transgender-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2018\/07\/10\/va-secretary-nominee-promises-protections-for-transgender-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"VA secretary nominee promises care for all vets, including transgender veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Veterans Affairs Secretary nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/30\/wilkie-steps-down-as-acting-va-secretary-top-deputy-retires\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Wilkie<\/a> promised lawmakers this week that suicide prevention will remain the department\u2019s top clinical priority and transgender veterans will not see any benefits changes if he is confirmed for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie, 55, was advanced by the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee members on Tuesday, likely setting up a full chamber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/18\/in-another-surprise-trump-names-wilkie-as-the-next-va-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\">vote on his appointment<\/a> later this month. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/07\/10\/for-the-first-time-a-senator-is-opposing-the-va-secretary-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\">voted against Wilkie<\/a>, the first time a senator has opposed a VA secretary nominee since the department was reorganized into a Cabinet-level post 30 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie is an Air Force Reserve colonel who previously spent time in the Navy Reserve and currently works as the Pentagon\u2019s top personnel and readiness official. He served as the acting VA secretary for two months following the firing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/03\/28\/shulkin-out-trump-fires-va-secretary-after-weeks-of-controversy\/\" target=_blank>David Shulkin<\/a> from that Cabinet post in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his confirmation hearing last month, Wilkie received strong support from most members of the Senate veterans committee, who characterized him as a stabilizing force for the embattled agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/06\/27\/va-secretary-nominee-promises-more-medical-choices-for-vets-but-not-privatization\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18178687465381.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA secretary nominee promises more medical choices for vets, but not privatization<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Improving veterans&#039; access to health care would be one of his biggest priorities, Robert Wilkie said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But several senators still had unanswered questions after that two-hour public interrogation, and submitted additional queries to the nominee for additional clarification. Those answers came this week, just hours before the committee vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them were several follow-up questions related to Wilkie\u2019s role in crafting President Donald Trump\u2019s new Defense Department policy on transgender troops and recruits, an issue that has been the subject of multiple legal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie said he recused himself from that decision because he was confirmed to his Defense Department post well after the legal challenges had begun. In response to concerns about how those cases may affect VA policies, the nominee promised he has no plans to make changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe department is proud to provide care, benefits and othe VA services to all veterans, including transgender veterans,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cThat policy will remain unchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that he values \u201cthe service of all veterans regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation, and they will all be treated with the respect and the support they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statements could calm lingering concerns among some Senate Democrats about Wilkie\u2019s support of Trump\u2019s policies, or Wilkie\u2019s past work for conservative figures like former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former Sens. Trent Lott and Jesse Helms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie told lawmakers he is \u201ccommitted to a diverse and inclusive workplace\u201d and promised prompt disciplinary action for any VA employees found guilty of discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He listed his top policy priorities as implementing the new VA Mission Act \u2014 an overhaul of the department\u2019s community care health programs \u2014 and modernizing veterans electronic medical records, as well as reducing benefits backlogs and reforming VA\u2019s human resource systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Shulkin\u2019s lead, Wilkie said that his top clinical priority will remain suicide prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuicide prevention ties into many veteran issues, such as opioid abuse, mental health, PTSD, homelessness,\u201d he said. \u201cVA\u2019s number one clinical priority has to be to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior, and that requires a focused, national approach to engage with all veterans whether or not they receive care in the VA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No timeline has been set for a full Senate vote on Wilkie\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last week, our committee considered Robert Wilkie to be secretary of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DeptVetAffairs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DeptVetAffairs<\/a>.
