Michael X. Garrett, commanding general of U.S. Army Forces Command, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=408813100102290\" target=_blank>issued the challenge<\/a> Sept. 10 on Facebook and invited all soldiers and leaders to do leg tucks together during the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt breaks my heart many mornings that I wake up to reports of young men and women, soldiers, who end their own lives,\u201d Garrett said. \u201cSuicides are a tragedy. And they\u2019re one of the one areas where we break trust \u2014 we, the military, break trust \u2014 with the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps and the Army had the highest cases of all the military branches, with its troops committing suicide 50 percent more, Military Times previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/04\/28\/soldiers-and-marines-die-by-suicide-50-percent-more-often-than-sailors-and-airmen-report-finds\/\" target=_blank>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a complex issue \u2014 though intervention has proven to be effective if someone displays suicidal ideations,\u201d said Col. James Scott Rawlinson, director of public affairs for U.S. Army Forces Command, in an email to Military Times. \u201cIt touches every military service as well as every community in our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rawlinson said Suicide Prevention Month gives the Army the ability to highlight its efforts to \u201cstrengthen resilience, enhance personal readiness and increase awareness of available resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FORSCOM recently launched its hashtag #UDontStandAlone campaign to provide information and resources for soldiers who may be contemplating suicide and to educate others in ways to spot warning signs and how to handle potentially sensitive situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey may not know what to do when they identify a problem, which is what we want to address,\u201d Rawlinson said. \u201cWe want to make it clear at every level that there are resources available for those who need it, and to educate everyone on how to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign is also being used to promote Army services like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armymwr.com\/\" target=_blank>Morale, Welfare and Recreation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armymwr.com\/programs-and-services\/boss\" target=_blank>Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers<\/a> events and resiliency programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerhq.org\/Home\" target=_blank>Army Emergency Relief<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\/confidential-help\/non-medical-counseling\/military-and-family-life-counseling\" target=_blank>Military Family Life Counselors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\/\" target=_blank>Military OneSource<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\" target=_blank>American Red Cross<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/readyandresilient.army.mil\/r2performancecenters.html\" target=_blank>R2 Performance Centers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strongbonds.org\/\" target=_blank>Strong Bonds<\/a> retreats and various mental health resources like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=_blank>Military Crisis Line<\/a>, Rawlinson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several units participated in the leg tuck challenge, including the <a Grinston<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leg tucks \u2014 used in the Army\u2019s Combat Fitness Test \u2014 won\u2019t solve military suicide solely through the physical activity alone, though exercise has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23901428\/\">proven to help<\/a>. The challenge is meant to help create a support network for soldiers and others in their unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFeelings of loneliness and isolation are historically contributors when soldiers have exhibited suicidal ideations, but there are a number of other factors as well,\u201d Rawlinson said. \u201cBy engaging routinely with our soldiers and truly
