Ryan Kranc of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/01\/10\/armor-officer-charged-in-gun-trafficking-scheme-involving-4-million-in-heroin\/\" target=\"_blank\">16th Cavalry Regiment<\/a> at Fort Benning, Georgia sent out a tweet on Wednesday addressing travel disruptions due to inclement weather and massive cancellations at one national airline. Kranc told those worried about disruptions to their travel plans to contact their chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2022\/12\/30\/airline-breakdown-upends-holiday-leave-for-service-members\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22363831810683.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Airline breakdown upends holiday leave for service members<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Active duty military personnel were caught in limbo as thousands of Southwest Airlines travelers got stranded across the U.S. by canceled flights.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy number one priority is to make sure our team, Soldier, civilians and families are safe,\u201d Kranc said in a tweet. \u201cDo not worry about leave dates or what\u2019s chargeable \u2014 we have accommodations and authorities for situations like these, and I intend to exercise them in the best interest of our troopers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message to troops comes as holiday travel plans for thousands have been derailed due to severe winter weather across the country. Severe cold fronts and snowstorms across much of the country caused delays across multiple airlines in the days leading up to Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Southwest Airlines \u2014 who holds the second highest share of domestic flights among U.S. airlines \u2014 faced systematic failures with its computer systems that also left thousands stranded across the country. Since winter weather started the slate of cancellations on Dec. 22, Southwest has cancelled more than 15,000 flights. Much of the disruptions was from a failure in Southwest\u2019s computer systems, the vice president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/southwest-cancellations-meltdown-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with CBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Be safe heading home &#8211; that\u2019s our number one concern. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3HSoPigCHU\">pic.twitter.com\/3HSoPigCHU<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\udde9 Destroyer 6 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\udde9 (@316thCavCdr) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/316thCavCdr\/status\/1608246609481195527?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 28, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/12\/30\/airline-breakdown-upends-holiday-leave-for-service-members\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> detailed numerous service members \u2014 and veterans \u2014 who faced cancelled flights and postponed holidays due to the flight cancellations. One service member, Amiah Manlove, used most of her savings to fly over 4,000 miles from Hawaii to Indianapolis, Indiana. Midway through her journey, Southwest cancelled a connecting flight, leaving Manlove to sleep on the floor of the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe plan to return to normal operations with minimal disruptions on Friday,\u201d Southwest said in a statement on Thursday. \u201cWe are encouraged by the progress we\u2019ve made to realign Crew, their schedules, and our fleet.
