Tell it to these soldiers who are already working in space operations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the buzz of the summer among some military circles was the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/movies-video-games\/2018\/03\/14\/space-force-the-really-bad-television-show-celebrates-its-40th-anniversary\/\" target=_blank>Space Force<\/a> \u2014 a force that still has many pundits scratching their heads as to what it will look like \u2014 a group of soldiers, working in small, six-person teams, is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/02\/28\/2021-a-space-odyssey-space-corps-could-launch-in-three-to-five-years-key-lawmaker-says\/\" target=_blank>tackling space<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/04\/09\/what-can-tesla-teach-the-air-force-this-4-star-has-some-ideas\/\" target=_blank>Army commanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two senior enlisted soldiers with the Colorado Army National Guard\u2019s 117th Space Battalion laid out for reporters Wednesday some of their ongoing work to give soldiers on the ground the view from space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Command Sgt. Maj. Frederick Korb III and Staff Sgt. Joseph Fauskee explained that their unit\u2019s dozen Army Space Support Teams, or ARSSTs, make up nearly half of all such teams across the active Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They integrate at the division staff level and run a host of duties, from tracking wildfires in the United States, to partnering with missile defense teams to spot incoming threats or alert the commander before the launch even occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked how soon they would know of a North Korean missile launch, Fauskee had an even quicker reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTypically, we would know before it launches,\u201d the staff sergeant said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not all, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teams give imagery and imagery analysis to commanders and can also help deconflict GPS assets and help leaders figure out which space-dependent assets they can employ and how best to use them in a complex fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/07\/30\/space-force-space-corps-space-guard-space-command-whatever-form-it-might-take-do-we-really-need-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/38317285074_366e372424_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Space Force, Space Corps, Space Guard, Space Command: Whatever form it might take, do we really need it?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Experts say that what Trump and some in Congress want with a Space Force could be accomplished in better ways<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a tactical level, their work hits the lowest levels, even down to squad movement. Though soldiers at that level likely won\u2019t know they were even involved, Korb said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does trickle down to those unit levels,\u201d Korb said. \u201cWe\u2019re telling planners what is out there, what\u2019s happening, where they can go, where they can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, the kind of work that the unit\u2019s been doing since at least 2007 is ahead of what the Army is now focused on \u2014 Multi-Domain Operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MDO concept, which is fast becoming core Army warfighting doctrine, aims to pull in all domains: sea, air, land, cyber and, of course, space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard platoon, company, battalion, even brigade commander, has spent a career thinking about the tangible, geographic forms of where they\u2019re fighting, terrain that hasn\u2019t changed much since warfighting began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while advancements in computing have brought cyber into the forefront of military strategy, space has been there since the United States and the Soviet Union first launched satellites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite U.S. dominance in most of the other domains for decades, space remains open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur peers are involved in space operations as much as we are,\u201d Fauskee said. \u201cWe have to be very deliberate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both soldiers declined to comment specifically about countermeasures but admitted that increasing instances of GPS-degraded or denied environments present new problems with older solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korb said part of their job is not only to educate senior leaders on the high-tech solutions they have with space-based equipment, but also that those items won\u2019t always be available, and old fashioned \u201cperishable skills\u201d such as map and compass reading remain critical on the future battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to use a map and compass,\u201d Korb said. \u201cThat vehicle isn\u2019t always going to run, that GPS isn\u2019t always going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The battalion deploys teams with Army divisions to better integrate space assets on the battlefield.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":86600,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":70,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":{"9":{"categories":["satellites","c2-comms","home","daily-brief","newsletters","intel-geoint"],"primary_category":"satellites"},"10":{"categories":["space","military-space-report","newsletters","the-americas","global","daily-news-roundup","land"],"primary_category":"space"}}},"categories":[100,23,93,12,25,70],"tags":[],"coauthors":[3366],"class_list":["post-49040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news-roundup","category-home","category-middle-column","category-news","category-newsletters","category-your-army"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"SFZDWLL2KFHV5KONYDZOE7LFXU","arc_canonical_url":"\/news\/your-army\/2018\/09\/05\/space-force-tell-it-to-these-soldiers-who-are-already-working-in-space-operations\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Space Force?
