{"id":49213,"date":"2023-04-17T12:45:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T12:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/17\/remains-of-army-pow-from-korean-war-identified\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:21:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:21:37","slug":"remains-of-army-pow-from-korean-war-identified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/home\/middle-column\/2023\/04\/17\/remains-of-army-pow-from-korean-war-identified\/","title":{"rendered":"Remains of Army POW from Korean War identified"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Department scientists have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/21\/remains-of-soldier-held-captive-in-korean-war-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">identified the remains<\/a> of a 30-year-old Army sergeant who died as a prisoner of war during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/03\/30\/remains-of-army-corporal-who-died-while-a-pow-in-korea-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">Korean War<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1950, Sgt. 1st Class <a href=\"https:\/\/dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil\/dpaaProfile?id=a0Jt0000008XqlCEAS\" target=\"_blank\">Ellis Coon<\/a>, Mount Herman, Louisiana, served as a member of C Battery, 503rd Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, according to an April 5 release from the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the Battle of Ch\u2019ongch\u2019on, officials reported Coon missing on Dec. 1, 1950. After the war, researchers discovered that Coon had died of malnutrition and a lack of medical care likely on Feb. 14, 1951, in POW Camp #5, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3352338\/soldier-accounted-for-from-korean-war-coon-e\/\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army declared a presumptive finding of death in March 1954 and declared the sergeant \u201cnon-recoverable\u201d in January 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly four decades later, on Dec. 21, 1993, North Korean officials transferred 34 boxes of remains believed to be of U.S. troops who had died during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel had recovered some of those transferred remains at the POW Camp #5. Using anthropological analysis, other evidence multiple types of DNA testing, scientists identified Coon\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sergeant\u2019s name is etched into the Courts of the Missing at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, along with others still missing from the Korean War, according to the release. A rosette indicating that his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/14\/remains-of-korean-war-soldier-pow-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">remains <\/a>have been identified will be placed next to his name on the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The date and location of Coon\u2019s burial have not yet been determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
