Ryan Knauss and other soldiers who have given their lives in service of their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knauss, a psychological operations troop, was part of Bravo Company, 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 8th Psychological Operations Group, when he died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knauss was killed when a suicide bomber struck Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Aug. 26, 2021. The 23-year-old was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/08\/26\/explosion-outside-kabul-airport-casualties-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\">13 servicemembers killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Held at Memorial Plaza on Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Knauss\u2019 name was added to the Memorial Wall of Honor in a ceremony attended by his family, other Gold Star families \u2014 including those of all of the soldiers killed in 2017 during the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/05\/18\/helmet-cam-footage-triggers-medal-upgrade-for-soldier-killed-in-niger-ambush\/\" target=\"_blank\">Niger ambush<\/a> \u2014 fellow special operations soldiers and top Army brass in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1178\" height=\"807\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-g-20220526.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-g-20220526.jpg.jpg 1178w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-g-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=300,206 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-g-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=768,526 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-g-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,702 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1178px) 100vw, 1178px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday marks the first Memorial Day since we closed our last chapter after two decades of service and sacrifice to the nation in Afghanistan,\u201d USASOC commander Lt. Gen. Jonathan P. Braga said during the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel blessed that this year we are only adding one name to this wall, and it\u2019s Ryan\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we remember our fallen on this solemn day, we humbly reveal this 378th name on our memorial wall, for this chapter in our journey, Staff Sgt. Ryan Christian Knauss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knauss was the first from his unit to raise his hand and volunteer for the rapid deployment mission to Afghanistan, his battalion commander, Lt. Col. Daniel Kinsella, previously told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we got word of this mission, Ryan was the first to raise his hand and say, \u2018I will go \u2014 send me,\u2019\u201d Kinsella said. \u201cHe was playing a direct part in saving American lives and getting them to safety. He was living out his life\u2019s purpose, and making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remembered as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/09\/27\/the-absolute-best-of-us-teammates-eulogize-psyop-soldier-lost-in-kabul-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe absolute best\u201d of his team<\/a>, one fellow soldier \u2014 who wished to keep his identity private \u2014said Knauss was an eclectic and loveable warrior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy did it have to be the absolute best of us?\u201d asked the teammate. \u201cMany of the people in here, myself included, would have given anything for it to be us instead of him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1223\" height=\"765\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-e-20220526.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-e-20220526.jpg.jpg 1223w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-e-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=300,188 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-e-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=768,480 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/memorial-day-e-20220526.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,641 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1223px) 100vw, 1223px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as Braga shared during the ceremony, Knauss wasn\u2019t known as someone who would be second to anything, even in sacrifice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRyan\u2019s detachment praised him as a \u2018fire and forget weapon,\u2019 possessing a level of maturity and trustworthiness beyond 23 years,\u201d Braga said. \u201cRegardless of the circumstances he maintained a great attitude that was accompanied by a constant smile.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing Knauss\u2019 father, Braga added, \u201cyou have a lot to be proud about there, on how you raised him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hailing from the small town of Corryton, northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, Knauss is survived by his parents and his wife Alena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery Sept. 21, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRyan\u2019s attitude was manifested by the excitement he displayed serving in the PSYOP regiment alongside 75th Ranger Regiment,\u201d Braga said. \u201cRyan made everyone around him better, and his love of being a soldier was evident to everyone who knew him. His love of being a soldier was only surpassed by his love for his family and his wife Alena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour memory will live on forever in the hearts of your family and your teammates,\u201d Braga added. \u201cI promise you that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff Sgt.
