{"id":49589,"date":"2022-01-06T17:23:40","date_gmt":"2022-01-06T17:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/01\/06\/us-soldiers-help-fix-the-only-well-in-djiboutian-village\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:12:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:12:28","slug":"us-soldiers-help-fix-the-only-well-in-djiboutian-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/01\/06\/us-soldiers-help-fix-the-only-well-in-djiboutian-village\/","title":{"rendered":"US soldiers help fix the only well in Djiboutian village"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africom.mil\/about-the-command\/our-team\/combined-joint-task-force---horn-of-africa\" target=\"_blank\">Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa<\/a> helped give the gift of potable water to villagers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.navy.mil\/regions\/cnreurafcent\/installations\/camp_lemonnier_djibouti.html\" target=\"_blank\">Djibouti <\/a>this December by assisting locals fix a leak in their one and only source of drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in East Africa, Djibouti only sees around 5 inches of rainfall each year, making any reliable water source as precious as gold. And Chabelley, a village in the semi-arid Arta region of Djibouti, is the home of nearly 1,000 inhabitants, all relying on their well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis well is the only water source for quite a few miles,\u201d 1st Lt. James Fortson, construction management officer for the 712th Engineer Support Company, said in an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/412521\/job-well-done-djibouti-us-army-repair-villages-water-supply\">press release<\/a>. \u201cOutside the rainy season, water is hard to come by out here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the task force had been tracking the well leak for several months, it wasn\u2019t until soldiers with the 712th ESC arrived to Camp Lemonnier that they had personnel with the skills needed to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/djibouti-water.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/djibouti-water.jpg.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/djibouti-water.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/djibouti-water.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Spec. Beau Heithoff, a task force engineer specialist and a combat engineer with the Nebraska Army National Guard, said fixing the well became a team effort with the villagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heithoff, who also works as a plumber on the civilian side of his life, helped instruct soldiers and locals alike while they dug trenches, moved rocks, pulled up the old pipe and fixed the broken coupling responsible for the leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the right supplies and the skills, everyone was able to do their part,\u201d Heithoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repairs ultimately took less than a day, and to Fortson, the task showed just how important local relations are for soldiers abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur effort is about much more than fixing a well,\u201d Fortson said. \u201cIt is about demonstrating that we care about our partners, and that we want our relationship to last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, headquartered at Camp Lemonnier, combines sailors, soldiers, Marines
