Franklin H. Bennett, of Glendive, Montana, died on July 19, 1942, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/10\/remains-of-vietnam-war-soldier-killed-in-helicopter-crash-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">was buried<\/a> along with other deceased prisoners in the Cabanatuan Cemetery, Philippines in Common Grave 312. That information was gathered from prison camp and other historical records, cited in a Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3163029\/soldier-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-bennett-f\/\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a> published Jan. 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Months before, in late 1941, Bennett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/25\/remains-of-soldier-who-disappeared-during-korean-war-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">served<\/a> in the 54th Maintenance Company when Imperial Japanese military forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3163029\/soldier-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-bennett-f\/\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2017\/09\/27\/wwii-veteran-bataan-death-march-survivor-gets-his-medals\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP17268592990648.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">WWII veteran, Bataan Death March survivor gets his medals<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;As long as there is a New Mexico National Guard, these men will never be forgotten,&quot; said New Mexico National Guard Adjutant General Kenneth Nava. &quot;We will never forget their sacrifices.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Bataan peninsula and Corregidor Island had fallen to the invading force by early May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japanese military captured and interned thousands of U.S. and Filipino troops in POW camps. Most of those captured endured the brutal Bataan Death March and then were held at the Cabanatuan Camp. More than 2,500 prisoners died in the camp during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Jan. 30, 1945, U.S. Army Rangers alongside Filipino fighters liberated more than 500 prisoners from the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the war\u2019s end, personnel with the American Graves Registration exhumed the remains of those buried at the camp and relocated them to a mausoleum near Manila, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3163029\/soldier-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-bennett-f\/\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel attempted to identify remains in 1947. A dozen sets of remains were identified in Common Grave 312. But others were declared unidentifiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, in early 2018, unidentified remains from the grave were disinterred and transported to the accounting agency laboratory at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii for further analysis, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3163029\/soldier-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-bennett-f\/\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bennett\u2019s remains are scheduled for burial in Pensacola, Florida.
