Leroy M. Slenker was a member of the 75th Ordnance Depot Company in the Philippines in late 1941. He was captured and died as a prisoner of war, according to the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Allied forces fought to hold them off but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/179370\/after_pearl_harbor_soldiers_held_out_for_months_against_japanese_invasion_of_philippines\">within weeks retreated<\/a> to Bataan on General Douglas MacArthur\u2019s orders. Intense fighting on the island continued for months, until U.S. and Filipino forces were forced to surrender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/u-s-surrenders-in-bataan\">at the Bataan peninsula on April 9, 1942<\/a> and then at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/corregidor-the-last-battle-in-the-fall-of-the-philippines\/\">Corregidor Island<\/a> on May 6, 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japanese captured tens of thousands of American and Filipino service members and held them as prisoners of war, forcing many to march 65 miles from the Bataan Peninsula to a prisoner camp in what is now known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/News-Features\/Article\/1144025\/75-years-ago-guard-members-endured-bataan-death-march\/\">Bataan Death March<\/a>. The men marched in blistering heat and were given very little water or food,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmuseum.af.mil\/Visit\/Museum-Exhibits\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/196797\/bataan-death-march\/\" target=\"_blank\"> according to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency did not specify how Slenker was accounted for, but the agency renewed efforts to identify Americans killed in WWII in the 1970s.
