The policy, which comes nine months after the service revamped other parenthood policies, applies to active-duty troops and Reserve or Guard members on extended active-duty tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/04\/22\/army-overhauls-parenthood-policies-new-leave-guidance-postpartum-rules-and-more\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6811342.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army overhauls parenthood policies: new leave guidance, postpartum rules and more<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The policy overhaul also impacts family care plans, military schools and other key areas.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service was the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/01\/12\/most-troops-still-cant-take-their-new-12-weeks-of-parental-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\"> final branch<\/a> to implement expanded parental leave guidelines mandated by Congress and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/01\/04\/troops-entitled-to-12-weeks-of-leave-after-birth-adoption-of-a-child\/\" target=\"_blank\">issued by the Defense Department<\/a> \u2014 the Air Force and Space Force issued their policies on Jan. 5, the Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/19\/navy-lays-out-new-12-week-parental-leave-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">published theirs<\/a> on Jan. 19 and the Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/01\/31\/all-marines-can-now-take-nearly-3-months-of-parental-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced its changes<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates voiced frustration about the delay, alleging that some commands used the lack of Army implementation guidance as an excuse to deny extended leave in the interim. But soldiers facing pushback from their local leaders over taking leave might be thankful for the wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commanders who want to deny any portion of the nonchargeable 12-week leave will need to justify the decision to the first general officer in their chain of command, who is the only official allowed to formally deny parental leave requests. That policy applies to both mothers, who can take the 12 weeks of leave in addition to their existing six-week convalescent leave, and non-birth parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the other military branches have a similar denial procedure, though the defense department policy directs the services to establish appeal processes for partial denials. Soldiers are also authorized to request leave in nonconsecutive blocks of at least a week in length, but commanders have the authority to deny such requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also good news for parents whose children arrived during the delay in implementing the policy \u2014 the leave entitlement is backdated to Dec. 27, when the DoD memorandum authorizing it was signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But soldiers shouldn\u2019t wait to submit requests. New parents have a year to use or lose the benefit after their child arrives, with minor exceptions authorized for those who had to defer the request for deployment, temporary duty, professional
