Ted Budd during a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting March 7, the top general for the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/01\/31\/fort-bragg-authorities-seek-rape-suspect\/\" target=\"_blank\">Special Operations<\/a> Command described recent crime cases at Fort Bragg as corrosive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Special Operations Command is the higher command for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/01\/14\/3-soldiers-charged-in-fort-bragg-cold-case-death-still-unsolved\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Bragg<\/a>-based U.S. Army Special Operations Command and is led by Gen. Bryan Fenton.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/01\/09\/investigators-question-15-army-special-operators-in-ongoing-drug-probe\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635525330126420438-afghanistan-military-chamjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Investigators question 15 Army special operators in ongoing drug probe<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Investigators said this is part of an ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fenton was pressed by Budd to address \u201ca series of concerning incidents,\u201d which Budd identified as reports of \u201csuicides, murders, overdoses, drug trafficking and arrests\u201d involving the special operations community at Fort Bragg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Recent cases<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, in a letter sent to concerned senators, the Department of Defense confirmed 31 fatal drug overdoses at Fort Bragg between 2017 and 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, more than a dozen Special Operations Command soldiers were detained by the Army Criminal Investigation Division \u201cas part of its ongoing efforts to identify and mitigate the use of illegal narcotics,\u201d CID officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, on Jan. 18, 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Jimmy Lee Smith III, a culinary specialist for the 3rd Special Forces Group, was shot and killed in Raeford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff Sgt. Brandon A. Amos-Dixon, a culinary specialist under USASOC, was arrested in Virginia for allegedly shooting at his fianc\u00e9 and fianc\u00e9&#8217;s child Jan. 18 in Harnett County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that those reports, they\u2019re not indicative of the thousands of incredible men and women at USASOC,\u201d Budd told Fenton before asking what \u201cSOCOM is doing to combat these challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not accepted<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fenton said illegal, immoral and unethical behaviors are \u201catypical\u201d for the 70,000 service members who \u201care doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are corrosives toward the trust and confidence this committee, the secretary (of defense) and certainly the nation has in us, and we\u2019re laser-focused on eradicating that from SOCOM enterprise,\u201d he said during the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fenton denounced what he said are unwelcome behaviors in the SOCOM formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst and foremost, it disrespects that type of work that our SOCOM enterprise is known for,\u201d Fenton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fenton said one case of illegal, immoral or unethical behavior is \u201cone too many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While leaders recognize the service members are not immune, Fenton said, it\u2019s being looked at \u201cthrough a number of lenses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaders, Fenton said, are asking the \u201cwhole formation\u201d to point out behaviors that \u201cdisrespect\u201d SOCOM\u2019s \u201cdecades of successful operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee\u2019s chairman, Sen. Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, said the \u201chigh profile misconduct cases have reflected poorly on the special operations community,\u201d and merits building upon SOCOM\u2019s 2020 comprehensive review of culture and ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fenton said reinforcement policies are in place to hold those with unacceptable behavior accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a top priority because of what it does, not only to the trust that this committee and the others have in the SOCOM team, but to our overall readiness, and that readiness is important because it needs to be a very lethal force each and every time the secretary puts us on the job,\u201d Fenton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
