Angus King, I-Maine, and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., said they need the information to create policy addressing systemic suicide risks across the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But according to Senate staff, the Defense Department has missed its deadline on three mandatory reports from the fiscal year 2023 defense policy bill that were due in December 2023. One report called for post-9\/11 suicide numbers broken down by occupational specialty and military component. Another directed the agency to craft a standardized definition for \u201csuicide cluster,\u201d and the third required the Pentagon to study the relationship between low recruitment, operational tempo and physical\/mental health. An Army Times reporter went to the Capitol on Friday and verified that the reports were not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KOC1FIbwrhk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen title=\"Army tank units faced overwork &amp; higher suicides, investigation finds\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the Defense Department<b> <\/b>sent a letter to Congress saying it had<b> <\/b>gathered the numbers for the by-occupation suicide report. But the letter\u2019s author, acting defense undersecretary Ashish Vazirani, said the data \u201crequires more intricate statistical approaches to make appropriate and reliable comparisons.\u201d Vazirani estimated his office will submit the report June 28 \u2014 nearly six months late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King, who wrote the law mandating that DOD study suicides by their military job specialty, said the data is crucial to \u201caddress [military and veteran suicide] with a clear focus.\u201d The Senate Armed Services Committee member praised Army Times\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2024\/03\/11\/broken-track-suicides-suffering-in-armys-exhausted-armor-community\/\" target=\"_blank\">Broken Track investigation<\/a> \u2014 which revealed a link between repeated deployments and elevated suicide rates in recent years among armor brigades and tankers \u2014 as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2024\/03\/11\/broken-track-how-army-times-discovered-high-tank-unit-suicide-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\">complex research project<\/a> &#8230; [that] will save lives by informing how we better support those who defend America and our principles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2024\/03\/11\/broken-track-suicides-suffering-in-armys-exhausted-armor-community\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SexyassAbramsSunsetphoto.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">BROKEN TRACK: Suicides &#038; suffering in Army\u2019s exhausted armor community<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An Army Times data analysis found that armor brigades and tankers experienced higher suicide rates than the rest of the Army.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maine resident and retired Air Force Master Sgt. Chris McGhee, who suggested the suicide report to King, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.20yearsdone.com\/blog\/an-open-letter-to-the-house-and-senate-armed-services-committee-members-on-behalf-servicemembers-and-their-families\" target=\"_blank\">published an open letter Tuesday<\/a> calling for members of Congress to use their \u201cfull [oversight] authority to expedite the release of this study.\u201d McGhee told Army Times he was inspired to dig into specialty-specific suicide rates after a series of deaths among Air Force aircraft maintainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pentagon officials plan to meet with lawmakers about the overdue data in late March or early April, King\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Houlahan, a former Air Force captain, said Army Times\u2019 report confirms that \u201cspecific [military] professions are impacted disproportionately\u201d by suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow that we have the data, and more forthcoming, it\u2019s Congress\u2019 responsibility to act,\u201d Houlahan said. \u201cIf that means giving the DOD additional tools to address this, I look forward to working with my colleagues in both chambers, especially Senator King, to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third member of Congress, Rep. causes of suicide, reevaluate training methods and deployments, and improve care for the men and women who have stepped up to serve our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to<b> <\/b>Houlahan, the report can\u2019t come soon enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLives are at stake and any delay is deadly,\u201d
