{"id":50513,"date":"2023-12-04T17:05:58","date_gmt":"2023-12-04T17:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/12\/04\/army-leaders-want-soldiers-to-write-about-the-issues-facing-the-force\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:24:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:24:47","slug":"army-leaders-want-soldiers-to-write-about-the-issues-facing-the-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/12\/04\/army-leaders-want-soldiers-to-write-about-the-issues-facing-the-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Army leaders want soldiers to write about the issues facing the force"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is reviving its focus on professional writing, encouraging all ranks to contribute throughout their careers to the ongoing discourse on soldiering and how the service can adapt to changing times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one of his priorities, in September Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George <a href=\"https:\/\/mwi.westpoint.edu\/introducing-the-harding-project-renewing-professional-military-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> The Harding Project, which is aimed at reinvesting in professional military writing and fostering discussion and debate on a variety of military topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hardingproject.com\/p\/modern-war-institute-to-host-harding\" target=\"_blank\">Last week <\/a>at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, senior leaders such as Gen. Gary Brito, head of Army Training and Doctrine Command, Lt. Gen. Milford Beagle, commander of the Army\u2019s Combined Arms Center, and dozens of experts in military writing and study, met to evaluate the state of professional writing in the service, lay out goals to improve the effort and determine what gaps exist between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of that will include filling out the editorial staff of the various branch magazines and journals, opening up online access to various publication archives and using websites such as The Harding Project\u2019s host, The Modern War Institute at West Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mwi.westpoint.edu\/strengthening-the-profession-a-call-to-all-army-leaders-to-revitalize-our-professional-discourse\/\" target=\"_blank\">In an article<\/a> co-authored by George, Brito and Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer that was published on MWI in September, they noted that the service needs a diversity of opinions during this current inter-war period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cinter-war period\u201d reference calls back to the namesake of the new project, Maj. Edwin \u201cForrest\u201d Harding, who was selected as editor of the Infantry Journal in 1934. The major managed to more than double the journal\u2019s circulation in four years, pushing \u201ccritical debates over changing tactics and technology before America joined World War II,\u201d wrote Zachary Griffiths and Theo Lipsky on the MWI website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George and Brito noted the decline in articles and issues for the once-robust branch magazines in recent decades. Most of the publications have declined in output and readership and failed to adapt to modern demands of rapid online publishing, interactive tools and digital access to archives, Griffiths and Lipsky noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brito said he remembered learning about his own field, infantry, but also recalled reading articles and branch magazines covering other parts of the Army such as artillery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general wrote early on as a captain but looks back on an article of his that was published in Infantry Magazine on managing combat stress as a battalion commander. The piece was published following his own combat deployment in the early 2000s as a battalion commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beagle told Army Times on Thursday that a \u201ccrucible point\u201d in his Army career came when he was accepted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/usacac.army.mil\/organizations\/cace\/CGSC\/sams\" target=\"_blank\">School of Advanced Military Studies<\/a>, which pushed him to improve his writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that served him far more than passing his classes, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood writing is clear thinking,\u201d Beagle said. \u201cAnd clear thinking is also disciplined thinking. How disciplined can you be to get your thinking on paper in a succinct and precise way for others to digest and understand what you\u2019re saying?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brito offered a tip he\u2019s used over the years \u2014 write down those ideas, problems and challenges as they happen. Keeping a notebook, smartphone or even a dry erase board near your workstation will help capture thoughts that could develop into solutions for problems a soldier faces in their day-to-day work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCapture that at the moment so you can come back and research it,\u201d Brito said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of written discourse is about exchanging ideas, delivering new perspectives, and \u201cfundamentally, it\u2019s about learning from your peers,\u201d Beagle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some bragging rights involved, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George and Brito highlighted recognition efforts in their September article. The project will recognize three impactful articles each month, awarding the authors with a pen, coin and personal note of congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first such soldiers honored in the initial rollout included 1st Lt. Mara Tazartus for her article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moore.army.mil\/Armor\/eARMOR\/content\/issues\/2023\/Winter\/1Tazartus23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLessons Learned in Company Team Engagement Are Development\u201d<\/a> in Armor Magazine and Sgt. 1st Class Leyton Summerlin for his article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moore.army.mil\/infantry\/magazine\/issues\/2023\/Summer\/pdf\/12_Summerlin_txt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cStandardizing Excellence\u201d<\/a> in Infantry Magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those examples, from a junior officer and enlisted soldiers, highlight the diversifying of opinions senior leaders are seeking, Beagle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is absolutely critical to have that diversity of thinking and perspectives,\u201d Beagle said. \u201cGood writing, good thinking, doesn\u2019t really have a rank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Chief\u2019s December picks, Command Sgt. Ryan Van Wie\u2019s article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armyupress.army.mil\/Journals\/Military-Review\/English-Edition-Archives\/November-December-2023\/Task-Organizing\/?utm_source=substack&#038;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\">Task Organizing the Combined Arms Battalion for Success in Eastern Europe<\/a>,\u201d in Military Review and Maj. Ryan Cornell-d\u2019Echert\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/fromthegreennotebook.com\/2023\/11\/15\/good-leaders-ask-better-questions\/?utm_source=substack&#038;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201cGood Leaders Ask Better Questions\u201d<\/a> in the Green Notebook, took home the monthly honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brito noted that it can be challenging, and he understands that some might be hesitant about \u201csticking your chin out there.\u201d But if a budding writer is confident in the topic and can provide a relevant perspective that can help other soldiers learn, then it\u2019s worth helping their peers and their profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beagle agreed that writing isn\u2019t easy. It\u2019s hard to put out ideas that might be shot down or challenged. But the feedback, even if critical, \u201cwill absolutely make them better at the end of the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWriting is hard, we all know that,
