The Army is closing in on\u00a0wireless technology that will\u00a0connect an\u00a0infrared image from a rifle scope camera into the view of a soldier’s night vision goggle.\u00a0When the new\u00a0gear\u00a0rolls\u00a0out in a few years, officials say it will revolutionize how deadly\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and safe \u2014 soldiers can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s really blow-your-mind cool,”\u00a0Sloane told Army Times and other media outlets at a roundtable at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0ENVG, first fielded in to soldiers in 2009, provides thermal imagery that\u00a0amplifies heat signatures, rather than simply enhancing visible light. This means\u00a0potential threats appear with substantially more contrast, even through visual impediments, such as smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PEO Soldier has linked the ENVG program into another program for a rifle scope,\u00a0the Family of Weapon Sights \u2014 Individual. By linking the two, a soldier will be able to aim his weapon in the middle of the night, without raising it to his eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer BAE Systems and DRS\u00a0Technologies<\/a>\u00a0will begin production of the ENVG-III, which should begin fielding\u00a0to soldiers\u00a0by Oct. 1, 2016. Also this summer, the Army will make limited numbers of\u00a0FWS-I to try out, with an anticipated fielding date in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two cameras,\u00a0one picture: how it works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when a grunt is operating with both his ENVG-III and FSW-1 how will it\u00a0work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soldier’s goggle will connect to\u00a0wiring within the helmet and a processor in the back (removable for daytime operations). The ENVG-III system, including battery,\u00a0weighs under two pounds. The processor will communicate with the FWS-I, attached to the rifle, and weighing an estimated 1 to 1.5\u00a0pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These prototypes of the helmet-mounted Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III and the rifle-mounted Family Weapons Sights – Individual constitute a two-part system that will let soldiers see images from both infrared cameras on one helmet-mounted screen thanks to a wireless connection. That will allow for improved target acquisition and situational awareness. BAE produced the FWS-I prototype shown and DRS produced the ENVG-III, but in competitive contract both will produce both aspects, which operate interchangeably.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The FWS-I has increased thermal imagery to 1,000 meters.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A soldier has three imagery options when pairing the goggle with the rifle, and these options can be changed via a\u00a0three-button, remote, mountable on the Picatinny rail. The options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The gun scope’s\u00a0image overlaid on the ENVG view: Crosshairs and a circle distinguish the rifle scope view from the overall view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 A\u00a0picture-in-picture setting: the rifle scope’s image remains stationary in the corner, while the rest of the view is from the ENVG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Scope image only: Soldiers can simply relay the rifle’s image direct to the goggle, ignoring the broader ENVG\u00a0image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0latter two options\u00a0could be particularly useful in seeing and shooting around objects, without exposing a soldier’s\u00a0head or torso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers have collaborated on the project, and\u00a0Sloane said they have praised the clarity of the picture and improved situational awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And also survivability goes up. So they certainly understand, ‘Hey, I don’t have to put myself at risk. I could be in a vehicle, I could be in a building,’ and they get it, they’re smart. And when they get to talking, they’re coming up with ideas I had never heard of before,” Sloane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloane\u00a0expects the Army will pay an estimated\u00a0$10,000 per ENVG-III system and per FWS-I system. ENVG-II cost\u00a0about $14,000 each, but Sloane believed competition and improved technology will reduce sots.\u00a0The $812 million total\u00a0contracts<\/a>\u00a0(a ceiling that could drop)\u00a0split between\u00a0BAE and DRS, are estimated to be completed by May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other\u00a0capabilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022\u00a0The current helmet mounting system will be able to host the new ENVG-III’s mounting system. The processor-battery will be able to attach where the battery of ENVG-II used to, balancing the camera on the front of the helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022\u00a0The wireless transmission from gun-to-helmet will be very difficult to jam, Fuller said. Sloane said that’s largely because of a short range and\u00a0low power-emittance. It’s will only be detectable within a few feet, and is not designed to transfer imaging beyond the soldier’s “bubble.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
