Yolanda Gore will be the 89th garrison commander of Fort Meade, Maryland, when she takes command from Col. Michael Sapp on Aug. 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gore recently served as the former strategic initiative chief for the Army\u2019s deputy chief of staff over personnel at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/02\/west-point-to-honor-first-female-4-star-general\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7794542674_ac2d4e2ed0_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">West Point to honor first female 4-star general<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The first woman to become a four-star general in the U.S. military will be honored with an award at West Point.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m excited about the prospect of meeting new people and taking on the challenges this role will bring. It\u2019s an exciting feeling to envision what lies ahead,\u201d Gore said in an Army release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Army Public Affairs in early July, Gore noted her experience working closely with the office of the Secretary of the Army and was deeply involved in Medals of Honor<b> <\/b>ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDealing with personnel matters has been central to my career so far,\u201d she said. \u201cNow, as a Garrison Commander, I\u2019ll be immersed in the operational aspects of running an installation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fort Meade is the Army\u2019s second-largest installation by population. Gen. Donna Martin is the first woman to lead Fort Leonard Wood since it opened in 1941. She&#039;s also one of few African-Americans to do so.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fort Meade, which also houses various Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy units, is the largest employer in Maryland, according to the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located approximately 30 miles north of the Pentagon, Fort Meade is a 107-year-old Army installation named for Union Gen. George S. Meade, who served as commander of the Army of the Potomac, according to the installation\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally called Camp Annapolis Junction, the fort opened in 1917 and served as an Army training camp. It later served as both a recruit training post and a prisoner of war camp during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning in the 1950s, the installation housed a series of radar and air defense systems during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its current mission, housing much of the nation\u2019s intelligence assets, began in the 1970s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Col.
