Prosecutors say Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/27\/ex-army-sergeant-admits-to-killing-soldier-for-reporting-marijuana-use\/\" target=\"_blank\">plotted with a former sergeant<\/a> to kill Army Spc. Austin Hawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/27\/ex-army-sergeant-admits-to-killing-soldier-for-reporting-marijuana-use\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635695463470389701-photo-gaveljpeg.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Ex-Army sergeant admits to killing soldier for reporting marijuana use<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two troops made plans to \u201csilence\u201d their fellow soldier after he made a report about marijuana use to leadership, according to court records.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to court records, Brown was serving as an Army specialist at Fort Stewart in 2020 when he came to the former sergeant, Byron Booker, saying that Hawk had ruined his life by reporting Brown to superiors for smoking marijuana. Brown said he feared being kicked out of the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors say the two men conspired to retaliate against Hawk, 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to court records, Hawk was alone in his barracks room when Booker got him to open the door after midnight on June 17, 2020. Booker repeatedly slashed and stabbed Hawk with an unspecified sharp weapon. The medical examiner counted 40 wounds, including a fatal gash across Hawk\u2019s throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court documents say Brown was in his own barracks room at the time of the killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brown\u2019s plea agreement calls for him to serve 16 1\/2 to 20 years in prison, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney David Estes. He will be sentenced at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Booker, 29, pleaded guilty in October&nbsp;to a federal charge of murdering a military service member.
