Abdul Latifu at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/05\/23\/air-cav-is-back-in-vogue-new-units-class-waitlists-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Rucker, Alabama<\/a>, on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pvt. Brian Jones Jr., a 21-year-old trainee attending the service\u2019s air traffic control operator course, has been in custody since he attacked Latifu, said Lt. Col. Andy Thaggard, the top spokesperson for Fort Rucker and its Aviation Center of Excellence. Jones now faces a murder charge under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alleged perpetrator remains in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/09\/20\/congresswoman-calls-for-examination-of-military-pretrial-confinement\/\" target=\"_blank\">pretrial confinement<\/a> after a review hearing, Thaggard said, meaning he\u2019ll remain in custody until the trial. The military justice system does not have bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a source with knowledge of the incident, Latifu died after Jones attacked him with an Army-issued entrenching tool, or small folding steel shovel. The victim was a fellow trainee, according to Thaggard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/01\/11\/alabama-soldier-killed-with-entrenching-tool-fellow-trainee-arrested\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously told Army Times<\/a> the incident occurred just before 11:40 a.m. local time on Jan. 10, when authorities responded to an \u201caltercation\u201d between the two soldiers. It\u2019s not yet clear why the altercation began, and Latifu died that afternoon of his injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1400\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LatifuAGSU.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Pvt. Gen. Michael C. McCurry, Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Rucker commander, described Latifu as a \u201cpromising young soldier\u201d and offered condolences to the family in a Jan. 11 statement. \u201cOur hearts are with the families and units impacted by the incident, and we are focused on taking care of Soldiers, families, and leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not
