Aaron Downing\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Th move follows the Pentagon\u2019s release last month an update to the Defense Department\u2019s Arctic strategy, the first since 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said in July that an increased Arctic presence, upgrades to area installations and new equipment \u2014 including sensors and space-based technologies \u2014 would be crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army released its Arctic strategy in 2021, calling for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/09\/26\/optempo-resource-shortfalls-plague-alaska-brigade-leaked-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">new formations<\/a>, soldier training and gear for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/30\/a-new-cold-war-how-the-army-is-preparing-for-a-fight-in-the-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">cold weather climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army reflagged U.S. Army Alaska as the revived <a href=\"https:\/\/11thairbornedivision.army.mil\/History\/\" target=\"_blank\">11th Airborne Division<\/a> in 2022. In February, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2024\/02\/26\/8000-soldiers-tested-in-large-scale-combat-in-the-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">8,000 soldiers in Alaska<\/a> conducted a large-scale exercise across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two major maneuvers during the training highlighted the critical need for aviation assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the exercise, soldiers conducted a 150-mile Apache-led deep strike on a target and moved a multi-launcher rocket system more than 500 miles to a location above the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2024\/02\/26\/8000-soldiers-tested-in-large-scale-combat-in-the-arctic\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/paratrooper-alaska.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">8,000+ soldiers tested in large-scale combat in the Arctic<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The exercise included a 150-mile helicopter deep strike and armed snowmobile hunter-killer teams.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did a 150-mile deep attack with our Apache division while avoiding air defense emitters that we put out,\u201d Maj. Gen. An aviation regiment and various other unit configurations maintained a presence in the state through the mid-2010s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that period aviation fell under
