He also previewed potential fitness test shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The often-maligned \u201ctape test\u201d remains the standard across the force for measuring a soldier\u2019s body fat if the individual is not compliant with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/12\/army-wont-change-weight-tables-after-body-composition-study-sma-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">height and weight screening tables<\/a>. But change looms: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/20\/no-more-tape-test-army-study-to-reevaluate-body-fat-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">major study<\/a> led by Army researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/11\/sgt-maj-grinston-talks-barracks-acft-body-fat-and-mentorship\/\" target=\"_blank\">concluded in late 2022<\/a> considered alternative measurement methods and potential policy changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/12\/army-wont-change-weight-tables-after-body-composition-study-sma-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635974595155737520-tape-test-1jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army won\u2019t change weight tables after body composition study<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army&#039;s top NCO suggested that troops who score a 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test be exempt from body fat screening.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston previewed one pending change when he announced the service was developing a policy to exempt soldiers from body composition testing if they score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test. At the time, Grinston did not commit to an implementation timeline, and he did not specify what additional changes the Army would make to body fat testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there\u2019s a timeline, which Grinston provided during his Tuesday morning remarks at an Association of the U.S. Army event:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An Army directive implementing the body fat exemption for soldiers who score a 540 or higher on the new fitness test is undergoing staff review and \u201cshould be complete in March.\u201d<\/li><li>Grinston stated there are \u201ctwo more changes that we\u2019re looking to do before April\u201d in addition to the test score exemption.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear what the two additional policy tweaks will be, and a spokesperson for Grinston declined to elaborate further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But other services\u2019 recent actions may foreshadow the Army\u2019s options. The Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/09\/07\/marine-corps-moves-away-from-tape-test-in-measuring-body-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\">now uses scanners<\/a> and other technology to verify a member\u2019s body fat if they fail the tape test. The Air Force plans to implement a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/01\/10\/air-force-to-start-tracking-height-to-waist-ratios-in-april\/\" target=\"_blank\">waist-only body fat calculation<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grinston also addressed uncertainty about the future of the Army\u2019s fitness testing after Congress ordered the service to establish \u201cgender-neutral physical readiness standards that ensure soldiers can perform the duties of their respective\u201d jobs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/12\/07\/armys-fitness-test-might-be-revamped-yet-again-gender-neutral-and-job-specific-standards.html\" target=\"_blank\">fiscal 2023 defense policy bill<\/a> directed the service to make the changes by late June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is weighing two primary options there, Grinston said. One would be to establish a higher standard for combat arms soldiers on the new fitness test \u2014 which was originally designed as an age- and gender-neutral assessment before a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/23\/army-combat-fitness-test-debuts-with-major-changes-to-scoring-april-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">RAND study mandated by Congress pushed the service<\/a> to backtrack and implement different standards for male and female soldiers by age.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/23\/army-combat-fitness-test-debuts-with-major-changes-to-scoring-april-1\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6679807.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army Combat Fitness Test debuts with major changes to scoring April 1<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army also decided to eliminate the leg tuck event.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option is to implement a second fitness test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/10\/26\/earning-an-expert-badge-will-be-harder-with-this-proposed-fitness-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">modeled after the assessment<\/a> now used as part of testing for the Army\u2019s individual expert badges, Grinston said. That test requires candidates in full kit to complete a series of exercises and soldier tasks, bookended by two one-mile runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear yet which path the Army will take, but the Marine Corps has separate physical fitness and combat fitness assessments that members complete semiannually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo we
