Jon Meredith, who was relieved as commander of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Cavazos, Texas, in October 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/05\/19\/army-colonel-charged-with-sexually-assaulting-fellow-officers-wife\/\" target=\"_blank\">was formally charged<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meredith was accused of violating UCMJ Articles 120 and 133 \u2014 abusive sexual contact and conduct unbecoming of an officer, respectively \u2014 for alleged actions at Fort Cavazos, according to a copy of his charge sheet obtained by Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But last month, III Corps commander Lt. Gen. Sean Bernabe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/09\/15\/sexual-contact-charge-dismissed-for-ex-fort-cavazos-brigade-commander\/\" target=\"_blank\">dropped Meredith\u2019s charge of abusive sexual contact<\/a>. Now, the charge for conduct unbecoming of an officer has also been dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/09\/15\/sexual-contact-charge-dismissed-for-ex-fort-cavazos-brigade-commander\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-15-at-4.09.21-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Sexual contact charge dismissed for ex-Fort Cavazos brigade commander<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The officer, whose firing was followed by his wife&#039;s firing, still faces a general court-martial on lesser charges.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased on newly discovered evidence, the III Armored Corps Commanding General withdrew and dismissed the criminal charges against Col. Jon Meredith,\u201d III Corps spokesman Brian H. Harris told Military Times. \u201cThis decision was made in coordination and consultation with the Office of the Special Trial Counsel. It was based on an assessment of multiple factors which guide every commander in deciding the appropriate means of addressing allegations of misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision came about due to evidence that emerged in a related Army Criminal Investigation Division probe, Harris said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe prosecution was not aware that this evidence contained any information relevant to the Meredith court-martial,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sherilyn A. Bunn, Meredith\u2019s attorney, <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-colonel-charges-dropped\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Task &amp; Purpose <\/a>that the defense found text messages between the alleged victim and her husband that showed the couple conspiring to make the assault accusation because the woman\u2019s husband did not like an officer evaluation report from Meredith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris said that, while criminal charges have been dropped, prior disciplinary action taken against Meredith stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe newly discovered evidence was unrelated to the question of whether Col. Meredith engaged in conduct unbecoming an officer,\u201d Harris said. \u201cWhile Col. Meredith will no longer face a court-martial for conduct unbecoming an officer, there is still sufficient evidence to support the Commanding General taking appropriate administrative action on the misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Col.
